It's pretty basic and has been around forever.

udcnam - Yes thanks. I got off my lazy butt and looked in the motherboard manual. That feature is called RTC Alarm Resume and it allows me to set the date / time to turn on the computer. I can also set the date to zero "0" and it will turn on every day at the specified time...

But here is my sugesstion for something that could work. Set your bios setting for "reboot after power failure" or something like that. Then get a cheap $10 plug in-the-wall programmable timer and set the on time for when you want it to boot. The power will then tell the bios to boot your computer.

Actually, you can... kinda.

Your computer must be ACPI and support hibernation. What you do is add a scheduled task, and check the box to wake the computer to run the task. Hibernate the machine and it should wake up to run the task. (I'm not sure if a power off will work as well, but it might.)

I believe (but can't confirm) that as the machine is powering down, it tells the BIOS to set a wakeup alarm. At that time, the BIOS powers on the machine.

I was kinda thinking that, but if you do a search on the word "relay" you'll see that I have limited knowledge of their uses :D

I *think* my ups backup had a function built in to the software that allowed it to power on at a certain time and power off at a certain time. I'll check when I get home.

I don't have the software installed anymore and I doubt it would even work with XP.

Yep, suspend works. I dont think the power off option works, I have my machine off with a sceduled task but it only works when suspended, not off. I haven't tried hibernate though.

If you have your machine set to turn on when power is applied, you could use any timer device with an AC plug. If you want to go crazy with it, you could use an X-10 controller.

should also have a decent power supply for suspend. i remember one of my old comps would have its ps get very hot in suspend since its fan was off.

My absolute favorite bug of all time is in the Win2K database, before the product shipped. They were testing wake on lan and found that with a certain power supply/motherboard combination, when the computer woke, smoke started pouring out of the power supply.

They were able to repro this after replacing the now-dead power supply with one of the same make/model.

doesn't your network card have to support it? like those nice intel ones for about 50 bucks instead of the cheapos?
