Laura is 3 times as old as Maria was when Laura was as old as Maria is now. In 2 yrs. Laura will be twice as old as Maria was 2 yrs ago. Find their present ages.
wut is it?

not my assignment. just want to know the answer, if there is one... any help? c'mon i know there are some geniuses here.

<< Laura is 3 times as old as Maria was when Laura was as old as Maria is now. >>

Having read this baout 10 times I still don't get it.

i've got the answer 🙂

remember when you had to learn algebra in school, and you wondered "when am i ever going to need this?"? i bet you feel sheepish now! 😀

L = 3*(L - M)
2*(L + 2) = 2*(M - 2)

That's how I see it, use simultaneous equations to solve it.

Actually, now that I look at it again I don't think the first is correct.

But that's as much effort as I'm willing to give it.

😛

WTF does that first sentence mean?

I speak the queens english.

I went to one of the best high schools in the country.

I have a bachelors degree from an ivy league school.

I have a master's degree.

I have no idea wtf that means. I am going to go out on a limb and say that someone waas writing from memory and effed it up...

so the reason i got it was: Laura is 3 times as old as Maria was when Laura was as old as Maria is now

so when laura was 18, maria was 6, thus 3 times older

thus making their present ages 18 = maria, and 30 laura

in 2 yrs. Laura will be twice as old as Maria was 2 yrs ago

in two years laura will be 32, and two years ago maria was 16, thus double

i basically did guess and check for a few ages

<< would you like to share it? =) >>

i'll help ya out (viper is close, but no cookie):

L=3(2M-L)

this comes from L= 3(M-(L-M))

to interpret the first condition, think of this way. subtract the difference between laura and maria from maria. multiply that by three, and you have laura's age.

L+2 = 2(M-2)

i hate it when i hit quote instead of edit

I agree totally and your post helps me think I'm not quite as stupid as reading the sentence makes me feel.

ANyway the ONLY way to satisfy the second part is if laura is 4 and marie is 5. And that doesn't mean anything with the first babbling sentence.

just so u guys know, i didnt make it up, someone else is looking for the answer, and i just decided to post it here, because no one else knew.

SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW connection posted slow sry

Oh right - 30 and 18, not 18, 30 😉 that works too, but I think that that and 4,5 are the only ones that do. That first sentence is still meaningless.

Sh!t, I didn't get either equation right.

That's what I get for trying to do math while burning CD's, listening to music, & trying to get dinner ready.
