<< Laura is 3 times as old as Maria was when Laura was as old as Maria is now. >>

What this statement says to me is that laura is 3X as old as maria.

<< uhhh isnt 18, 30 right? >>

no because when laura was maria's age, which is supposedly 18, maria was 6. maria is currently 30, which is not 3 times 6.

<< Laura is 3 times as old as Maria was when Laura was as old as Maria is now >>

Is this supposed to be: Laura is 3 times as old as Maria ?

If that is the case, then it is easy to solve. The problem with word problems is that when people have problems with words, the problems... where was I?

no you people are not reading it right (i had to read it a few times to understand, as well).

laura is 3 times as old as maria was

when laura was maria's age.

you take the difference between laura and maria's age. subtract it from maria's current age. multiply that by 3. that is laura's age.

she was 3x older when when she was as old as maria, so if laura was 18, maria would be 6, (in the past)
but now in the present, when luras previous age (18) is now marias present age, laura would be 30, and maria 18

<< Oh right - 30 and 18, not 18, 30 😉 that works too, but I think that that and 4,5 are the only ones that do. That first sentence is still meaningless. >>

First sentence:

Laura = 3x as old as Maria was when Laura = Maria's present age

Taking Laura = 30, Maria = 18

When Laura was 18, (30-18 = 12 year difference) Maria was 6. Laura (18) = 3x Maria (6)

And it doesn't work with 4 & 5 - Laura can't be younger than Maria 😛

well the second part works but since the first sentence is a total f**k off I don't know what to do! gpunk, how are you the only person here who can comprehend the first sentence?

When Laura was 18, (30-18 = 12 year difference) Maria was 6. Laura (18) = 3x Maria (6)

but 18 is not laura's present age.

i dunno, momma always said i was special 😛

i comprehend the first sentence now and gopunk does have the correct answer. Now I know why I hate problems like this. They literally want to make me bash my head against a wall of nails and cut my wrists.

um.. maria is only 18, and laura is 30. See the 12 age difference? well when laura was 18, maria was 6 (holding teh 12 age difference) and that is 3x. Now, in two years laura will be 32, and she will be double the age of maria two years ago (16).

im right and i know it

edit: gopunk :i thought you were smarter than that: obviously i meant laura to be the 30 yr old one and maria to be 18, i even detailedly expained it

the question states "maria is" not "maria was"

hmm.

<<

<< but 18 is not laura's present age. >>

Yea - she's 30.

correct, so the ages do not hold for the first condition.

no, laura is 18 and marie is 12.

Laura is 3 times as old as Maria was when Laura was as old as Maria is now. So when laura was 12, marie was 6, right? Laura is NOW 3X as old as marie was then which is 3 X 6 = 18. Now for the second part in two years laura is 20. Subtract two years from marie's current age = 10, thus 20/2 = 10.

another thing, it did not state: list their respective ages. it just said list their present ages, meaning that i coudl put them in any order, just because laura was listed first doesnt mean that i had to put her age first

true, but unfortunately 30,18 or 18,30 doesn't hold for the first condition.

there is no way laura can be younger than maria.

L = 3(2M - L)
4L = 6M
L = (3M/2)

Thus, L must be greater than M.

you seem to be taking this a bit personally... if i came across as rude, condescending, or arrogant, i apologize, i really didn't mean to.

Ok Skoorb - I took your post and changed the ages - how is alee25 wrong?

ya it does: it says Laura is 3 times as old as Maria was when Laura was as old as Maria is now

it means that laura was 3 times older than maria when she (laura) was marias present age

how do you turn an "is" into a "was"?

laura is currently

3 times as old

as maria was when laura was maria's current age.

no its not personal, just that im becomign impatient.

i never meant for laura to be younger than maria, i just put their respective present ages: maria 18 and then laura 30

if you say that when laura was 18, marie was 6, then how can laura's current age be 18?

it means that Laura NOW is 3 times older than maria WAS when laura WAS as old as maria is NOW.

Laura = 18
maria = 12

Larua NOW (18) is 3 times older than maria was (6) when laura WAS as old as maria is now (12, IE, 6 years ago).

i never meant for laura to be younger than maria, i just put their respective present ages: maria 18 and then laura 30

that is how i read your ages. i assumed the larger number was laura.

with those numbers, maria was 6 when laura was maria's current age. correct? 6x3 does not equal 30.
