I don't get your point, Winston.
First, IMO this 'respect for the elderly' bit is mostly rose-colored nonsense. Maybe no one wrote in the history books about grandma and grandpa getting thrown out onto the poor farm or into debtors prison when they couldn't feed themselves anymore, but that is exactly what happened. Even the mystique of native American tribes is moslyt bullshit, they threw their old out into the cold, and then pretended to themselves that the old chose to do so out of some sense of noble stoicism.
Second, due to their solid voting blocs and ample free time, the elderly in the US of today effectively run this country. No politician running for asst dogcatcher can do anything without their support. Which is exactly why they have bestowed upon themselves all the 'benefits' of socialism while making sure the working young are the ones paying for it and receiving none of it.
You're right about the fear part though. God save the elderly in this country if the youth ever do wake up to what they're done, as the youth (by necessity) vastly outnumber them. Meh. I don't feel sorry for hypocrites.

Nebraska, fearing its record surpluses are threatened, is raising taxes yet again to make sure it continues to pile up resources.

The local television news is dominated by these shout down reports. On the national scene its grey hairs shouting down the "health insurance overhaul" because they don't want the government to take over. Ironically the majority of the people they interview are on Medicare already... On the local scene its all about Jim Suttle, the new mayor, putting the city through the ringer because its over committed financially for the next twenty-five years by people that are largely out of politics now. Secondly, these same people don't want to fix the broken wheel because they might lose out on money that is not there. Ironically the blue hairs dominate the protests against the major. And the funniest thing about the whole protest is the guy that supposedly lead it claimed something about he had a lot of time on his hands and this fills it.

The surge in retirees seems to be the most responsible reason for the shout downs. Today its health care. It could have been just about anything, but that's the best reason for someone that has nothing better to do. I can see it now, next week when Ben & Jerry's is raising the price of their cones by $.05 it'll be time to gather the protesters again! People with too much time on their hands will protest about anything.

You do know that the "grey hairs", in the last 24 months, lost about 65% of their life savings, don't you?
