This is just like high school. No one really likes each other, but some people do a good job at faking it...

Compared to some boards, this one is a good place to start. Odviously stupid stuff gets flamed, but good posts are left okay. I've seen some places that virtually require a strip search to check for stuff they might disagree with before posting.

It's also hard to answer the question if you haven't really experienced other forums. My guess would be that there's definitely a more hostile forum out there. There's always one above another. :p However, I'll try responding in the capacity of my experience: AT.

When participating as a spectator, you might say it's hostile. As a new member with the first post ever, you'll more likely say yes. As a senior member, you'll most likely say no. You became immuned as time went on. As an old member, you'll more like say yes because your perception of hostility is biased. You measure it up to what was acceptable at your time.

In my point of view, the forum is less hostile than it was 2 years ago. I admit I've been immuned. Nevertheless, looking from an objective point of view, which I believe I can do, I think the forum is less hostile than it was two years ago. Long ago, being a new member and starting a thread to say "hello" got you insults and "neffing". Two years ago, not being in a circle of friends or kissing butts got you hostility or dismissal (including creating grounds for it if there wasn't any). There's also the fact that the political discussions were moved to another subcategory. Political topics contributed significantly to the hostile environment.

On the other hand, the forum is more hostile than it was just a year ago. The change in members who frequent the forum is a contributing factor to the hostile nature.
Why won't you die?!

but who gets to decide if a thread is stupid or not? The mods? If a mod thinks a thread is stupid or inappropriate they'll lock it. But they don't go bashing the person who made the thread like some of the members on here do.

In general the n00b to people >500 posts ratio is small here compared to other forums. People aren't allowed to explode here (meaning profanity laced flame) or they'll get a vacation. This forces people to respond in a more logical manner and actually put some thought into their posts... Props to the mods.

If you think this place is bad, try the Social Entropy forum over at Penny Arcade. I lasted for 3 days before I bailed and came over here. I got flamed 500 million times for signing posts or for expressing anything resembling an opinion. Not to mention, the mods didn't do jack, regardless of how bad things get.

I dunno. It seems that while you have over 5K in posts, you've only been here seven months. Time-wise I'd say you're still a n00b here. And, you have diarrhea of the keyboard.

I would be more harsh, but I haven't got the heart for it these days.

How do you get almost 5K in a year?

True, this board has an unusually long n00b period.

As far as "what's stupid":
If you see something posted three times, posting it a 4th makes it a stupid post.
Linking BBSpot or The Onion and treating it like real news makes it a stupid post.
Posting the latest chain letter, or even old ones that are still circulating makes it a stupid post.
Although making fun of the mean mod might not make it a stupid post, it's a bad move.

If you want a proper flaming I would say the HardForum is a good place to get one. If you don't know your hardware you're going to know about it in no uncertain terms :) I think it's well moderated though so they don't let too much get out of hand.

Read the title before you correct it. And maybe read the thread to see that it's already been corrected. Why should a guy get called down on grammar twice?

What you really need to do is acquire an outlet for real social interaction then you'd realize words on a messageboard are meaningless.

Maybe you should read the title again? "Is their a forum more hostile then ATOT?"

People in the thread corrected his "their", not his "then".
