Is it ok to call the indiginious people of north america indians?

I think beloved patriot is the word that some Indians find offensive. I live right next to a big Indian Reservation. All the Indians here call themselves Indians, the ones that I go to school with :) anyway. On tv or newspaper, it's usually native americans.

My girlfriend used to call herself stupid, I think it was her old boss that taught her that though.

In England, "Asian" refers to Indian people and "Oriental" refers to eastern Asians like Chinese and Japanese.

I think someone decided to make up the phrase "politically correct" just to make everyone uncomfortable when talking about anything. :D

No offense but this is not the same. For the most part, whites like yourself are probably 10th plus generation. I think it's kind of lame for people who can trace their roots back to the Mayflower to say they are anything but white or American. It's funny, when you have a circle of friends and everyone says they are Chinese, Japanese, Bulgarian, etc, the white guy always has to chime in and say "Oh me? I'm 4% Scottish, 1% Swedish, 50% Italian, and some other stuff." Then for good measure, they have to mention, ALWAYS, "Oh yeah, and a bit of Native American, too." Every white person is a little Native American, as if claiming it somehow makes extermination better or something. Your Asian friend(s) that prefer to be called Japanese, or Chinese, or whatever ... they probably are 2-3 generation tops. They might have even been born in their native country.

I'm sure your friend is tired of people asking her if she's Chinese, Korean or Japanese, I get grouchy when someone comes by and makes some assumption about me being Chinese or Japanese.

As for the word Oriental I don't think most people care about whether its PC or not.

Probably because the "Orient" was not always eastern Asia.

Ever remember the "Oriental Empire" with it's capital of Babylon, in present day Iraq...

Or RICE DAWG.

What's the deal with AZN and rice? My old man cannot live without rice. Every dinner has to be served with rice.

I don't know but I can't live without it either. Lunch and dinner especially.

What is the 'orient'? You call people from Europe, Europeans. You can people from Africa, Africans. You can people from America, Americans. You describe people from the region they're from. 'Oriental' is an outdated term meant to describe goods of a particular region in a particular era. You don't call a TV made in Asia an 'oriental' TV anymore, because that cultural era is over.

Now that is a little bit much. Many people who are a part, even if small, say so because they are proud of it and have been taught to respect the culture. They're not some kind of Nazi exterminators.

BTW, that is what we would call a RACIST comment, most people don't realize that it is possible to make racist comments against whites.

I don't call people Oriental. I can normally tell if they are Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc.

But Rugs, and Trains and such are definitely Oriental.

Why does it matter how many generations of any given race/backround you are? Why does it bother you when whites describe where they came from and their make-up, especially if it's factual?

Not every white person has Native American in them.

Has someone ever said that being a little bit Native American makes them feel better about the genocide? Where did you get this from?
