I always used the word freely but some of my college friends says it's not politically correct  I've never heard anyone say that it's not PC. I hear stuff like oriental food in advertisements and stuff like that all the time.

I don't believe its PC, but what is the PC term for oriental?
It appears that there isn't one, unfortunately.

UNfortunately?
I don't want to call Orientals Asian, I want to call them by something that is understood to mean that they are from the Orient.

I think people forget that Russians are asian, too.

That's why I hate the term "asian" when describing people from countries such as China, Japan, Korea, etc.

"Oriential" is a perfectly legitmate term, AFAIC. Those who say it's used to describe funiture or rugs are just whiney. They come from the same freaking place! What's the big deal!?? It's not like I'm calling you a piece of furniture or rug or something.

Asian can refer to anyone that is from Asia, that includes

The majority of Russia
Turkey
The middle east
India

and a bunch of other countries

If you want to be more specific use mongoloid or oriental. mongoloid or oriental refers to people like me, who have a flat face, slanted eyes and yellow skin.

I've had people get pissed at me for using the word Asian and Oriental because Asia or the orient is so big. A friend gets grouchy when you refer to her background as anything other then Japanese, but then again I don't get pissed when someone calls me white then demand that they call me Scottish with a hint of Native American.

I think someone decided to make up the phrase "politically correct" just to make everyone uncomfortable when talking about anything. :D

No offense but this is not the same. For the most part, whites like yourself are probably 10th plus generation. I think it's kind of lame for people who can trace their roots back to the Mayflower to say they are anything but white or American. It's funny, when you have a circle of friends and everyone says they are Chinese, Japanese, Bulgarian, etc, the white guy always has to chime in and say "Oh me? I'm 4% Scottish, 1% Swedish, 50% Italian, and some other stuff." Then for good measure, they have to mention, ALWAYS, "Oh yeah, and a bit of Native American, too." Every white person is a little Native American, as if claiming it somehow makes extermination better or something. Your Asian friend(s) that prefer to be called Japanese, or Chinese, or whatever ... they probably are 2-3 generation tops. They might have even been born in their native country.

Ok, first of all thank you for making a wonderful assumption. Whites like myself are just as proud of our backgrounds as anyone. At no point did I scream "three cheers for genocide". I think you need to run future post like this one past mom before you post it.

My last name is Johnston which is Scottish and I have enough information to clam more then "a little bit" Native American...good enough for me to say I'm Native American and Scottish. Go be bad somewhere else.

That is incorrect... When people refer to someone as being Asian, most people think of China, Japan, Korea, etc... basically, what you would think of as "Orientals". Just because the term Asian is associated with the continent Asia does not mean it encompasses all the countries within it. For example, when someone says I'm "American", what does that imply? It usually means they're from the United States. Of course you know that America also includes Mexico, Canada, and a ton of other countries in South America. Also, when someone states they are Asian, I don't think of people in India or the Middle east. People from India, usually refer to themselves as Indian, not Asian.
