It has nothing to do with that argument.

Strictly about the selfishness of the scarce resource.

Why would you be OK with a vehicle that gets less gas mileage than a vehicle dating back to 1973???

Means less gas for the rest of us.

What ever happened to wanting humans to progress forward??? Why this love affair with going backwards?

Nah...far from over.

Although, a few may be rethinking their SUV purchase after the big snowfall we had 2 weeks ago (8" around here...up to 3' about 30-40 miles north).

I saw several SUVs stuck in medians, off to the side of the road, one was upside down and one moron decided to cut an on-ramp short and found himself on the wrong side of the guardrail at the top of the ramp!

SO which SUV is it that you currently drive? It was just a question and not an attack on anyone or anything, you took it that way I guess becuase you are upset over the amount of gas you put into your SUV.

yeah if anything the SUV phenomina is just getting rolling and will be in full swing the next few years...lexus and toyota with their hybrid SUVs dont help much either....personally I don't mind smaller size SUVs such as the Lincoln Aviator and such but the larger ones are just a pita to drive around if you have a small car like my svt tour.

if your pissed off at door dings, why dont you get pissed off at the 2 door sports cars? their doors are MUCH longer and thus would much more easily hit your car than any 4 door vehicle.
dont be so lazy, park further away and away from vehicles.

people will drive what the fvck they want to drive. i feel SUV's are a good vehicle, useful with room for a good amount of people/stuff and can tow stuff. its just a very useful vehicle. and in all actuality i dont believe they will go away, there is no replacement for what they can do that will look different etc. there are only so many general vehicle designs.

It's about a wash. Sports cars aren't as wide as SUVs. Trucks/SUVs fill the average parking spot with the vehicle body alone.

here we go again..let me throw a cannister of gasoline into the flames..

"well it is of damn concern to me when they ding my car with their big doors, run me off the side of the road because of the huge blind spots, cant stay in their own lane when driving taking two lanes, cant park right taking up two parking spaces...yaddaydaddyadydyblahblbahlahlahalhmoanamoanaon"

I'm sure you're one of those idiots who supports suing Tobacco companies too, because we all know they're at fault.

Actually that is a horrible analogy. Second-hand smoking would be a much better one.

Has anyone ever actually died or suffered from some sort of permanent medical ailment caused directly by second hand smoke?

With new Hybrid SUVs coming soon, your argument is moot. The new Toyota Highlander (coming this June) has more horsepower than the current model, gets 28-33 mpg (better gas mileage in city driving), and can go 600 miles on a full tank.

The age of the SUV will not end until the economy craps out.
If people couldn?t afford $50k, $60k and $70k trucks then they wouldn?t sell.

Why do so many Jeep drivers seem to hate the Hummer? Sounds like someone is a little jealous...

LOL driving in 4WD doesn't mean braking is greater either. I've had my truck for 10 years now, drove in the Buffalo snow for half of that... and last week I didn't brake enough for a left turn and almost slid onto the sidewalk from the momentum as I completed the turn... I didn't know whether to accelerate (for the front-wheel traction in the turn) or to just keep braking as it was happening... sh!t happens to everyone. SUVs are also heavier and require an entirely different mindset than "hey I have 4WD - now I can go anywhere".

i dunno...
i think it is here to stay.
family vehicles have always been around, right since the 70's.
families need space...whether it be station wagon, minivan or suv.
large station wagons are nothing new, neither are large vans (remember the astro?)

I'm happy to see an attractive family vehicle. I can't stand station wagons or vans.
That being said, i'm a big car guy. I have no problems with suvs.
<-- grew up with suv's. bronco2, 2 GMC suburbans, Ford Expedition.

people have been watching too many toyota commercials.
just because you see your car driving up snowy mountains, doesnt mean your truck is a superstar on icey roads.:p

Right about which of your generalizations which may be true for minivans, trucks, or pickups as well ?

I'd say that the peak of SUVs have come and gone. But it'll be around for a good long time as long as Pseudo Utility Vehicles are still hot. They're basically tall wagons for people that would never drive a wagon.

Example: Lexus RX330, Subaru Forester, Nissan Murano.

All of 'em. And yes, like I said, the drivers that I was talking about don't only own SUVs. It's just scarier when they're in an Economy Sized Super Dooper Pooper Scooper vehicle that weighs 2.5 tons. Stick 'em all in Minis.

Not more noticeable here. It's easier to spot things like this (the poorer driving, etc.) when you *want* to.

The one legit gripe is and always will be that you cannot see as easily around them. Follow further back or don't follow at all. That's what I do with trucks.

Dude, we're going to run out of gas. Period. If not tomorrow then maybe the next day. If not me and you then maybe our kids, kids. Having mom drive a tercel isn't going to overly impact this fact. How about this, we'll drive our gas guzzlers with full knowledge we're putting a squeeze on the gas supply - while you go ahead and get yourself in your prius and show us the way. We'll all be driving a Prius sooner or later according to your line of thought so let me enjoy my gas guzzler until then. Aren't you yourself being selfish for making me drive the car I don't want to, just to do YOU a favor?

no no no... there's so many of the anti-gas-guzzler people around here, but so few of the anti-racing types... I don't get it.

Oh! That reminds me!

A friend of mine and I went to see a movie Christmas night. The parking was plowed and there were snow piles a good 8-10' high. Someone had taken a little Toyota/Nissan truck and parked up completely up the side of the snow pile!
