I sure as fsck hope so.
I know you love your VW bus & all, but I would never put my family in one...
Take a folding chair out to your driveway and have a friend drive his car into your knees. That'll give you an idea of what it will feel like to have a front-end crash in an old VW bus. The engine's in the back. And you sit so far up front in that vehicle that your knees basically ARE the front bumpers. Not literally, but pretty close.

Right, and Tom and Ray are SOOOOO reliable as sources.
And that crushed bus... You really think a different car would have survived better in that kind of wreck?
that is the primary false perception peope have .
if you want saftry drive a safe car like a volvo or a suburu
no neeed to get a huge unsightly SUV
they are actually more unsafe ( roller overs etc ..)
I own a VW Golf with a crapload of airbags and fair crashworthiness ratings, I'm not saying you have to have an SUV to be safe, I am saying that old VW buses are not crashworthy, and that I would not put my family in one...
And Gurck is incorrect about "pick ups not being allowed, there are exceptions:
Passenger Class Registration for Pick-up Trucks
Can I get a passenger class registration for my pick-up truck and drive the truck on parkways?
You can get passenger class plates for a light-duty pick-up truck that has an unladen weight of 5,500 lbs. or less.
See form MV-114 (Information For Pick-Up Truck Owners) to get more information.
The agency that controls a parkway decides if pick-up trucks with passenger class plates are allowed on the parkway. To make sure you can drive your pick-up truck on a parkway, contact the agency that manages the parkway. Some parking regulations and traffic regulations in New York City depend on the type of vehicle plates on your vehicle. Passenger class plates on your pick-up truck can change how NYC regulations affect you. Contact New York City about their regulations.
What pick-up trucks qualify for passenger class plates?
A pick up truck that is not changed and has an open bed can qualify for passenger class plates if the truck:
* is used only for non-commercial purposes, and
* has an unladen weight of 5,500 lbs. or less (the unladen weight of your pick-up truck is listed on the title certificate and on the door sticker), and
* does not have any business advertisements on the truck.

The bans are for primarily intended for commercial vehicles, here in Texas, we'd crucify someone who dared to suggest such a thing, as would most states.
