Is the PS3 unhackable?

I find the idea of an open ps3 intriguing, but I don't know if I'd really utilize it. From what I understand it allows you to run unsigned code, which could let you run homebrew programs, burn games to hard drive (quicker game loading?), and burn games to discs (hardcopy backup?). While homebrew programs could be interesting (perhaps a functional web browser), I don't see much benefit for the other two besides pirating. Quick game loads would actually be pretty nice, but I don't think there's as much need for backups considering that blu-rays are supposed to be more resilient.

Basically, what cool things could you do with a hacked ps3 that isn't pirating?

store your games on a hard drive.

no different than me ripping my dvds, HD DVDs (yes i have some) and my blu rays to my hard disks for convenience sake

in the case of the PS3, wouldn't it also give you a major performance boost? the drives are apparently really slow.

i've done this for my wii. my games site on an old external hard drive and it's so much nicer not having to flick disks in an out. thinking about getting a jtagged 360 for this reaons.

You mention downloaded games but again, look at Sony's policies which are crap. I don't know current policy but movies you bought and downloaded from Sony can't be re-downloaded. That is their official policy. I heard you can call Sony up and they'll de-authorize the previous console and allow you a re-download but tread with caution on that front. Also not sure on downloaded games. Nintendo also currently has no way to back up your downloaded content. Point is, while you may be able to download movies and games, if you lose it somehow or your console breaks, you may still be screwed and forced to buy another.

You specifically mention movies, and those I don't know about. But I have a friend that had an original backwards-compatible 60GB PS3, and it died, so he replaced it with a slim. He was able to log in to his PSN account, and re-download all of his games.

It's unhackable...and the 2 times that its been close to happening, SONY jumped all over it within a few days to a week...thats why other OS is now gone.

As long as you don't download firmware you're fine. That's how most hacks go down these days. As long as you don't update you're fine.

I will admit that, not having kids, I don't see the whole picture with regards to 'backups'. I like to collect things so I keep everything sealed away. I cannot imagine chasing after kids' software. In that sense, backup would be convenient. The only problem is, for each person like you, there's a hundred thieves who just want to play games they got illegally. I don't know about movies but on PSN, iirc, you can re-download games. I'm not sure about movies. Nevertheless, hopefully these companies will take yours and other legitimate complaints. One problem may be the retail stores and Luddites' aversion to downloads only, which would force these companies to address these concerns head-on. Hopefully, some smart engineers can figure a way out of that.

I used to feel the same way as you. Then my wife and I had our first child. He is now 19 months old, and loves to get into everything. The other day, he pulled out all (3) of my PS3 games out of a closed drawer and proceeded to stand on them one by one. By the time I noticed, all three discs were broken. Guess I'll never finish Red Dead or a season of NHL 2011. At least I finished God of War III.

The aversion to downloads isnt just for luddites. Yes, you certainly get a bit of short term security, but you lose a lot in the process:

- A physical medium to collect, store and resell.
- Often the inability to share games across consoles/PCs even in the same household - with steam, you cant even play two legally purchased, separate games under the same account at the same time.
- Potential loss of your entire library if/when a company goes out of business, or even if your console breaks (Wii).
- Almost always higher prices across the board.

Each of those things is a negative to the consumer, and a positive to the vendor. Their not interested in our complaints, since remedying them would hurt their bottom line. I wouldnt expect them to act in anything but their own interest, and in return, they shouldnt expect their customers to act in anything but their interests.

Great news that the PS3 is hacked IMO - Once the hacks have matured I'm definitely going to get on board. I cant wait to load all of my legally purchased games onto the HDD and never have to swap discs again, not to mention quicker load times.

The PS3 sucks that's why no one has been hacking it hardcore J/K LOL
BR discs are expensive and so are BR burners

I finally got a Maximus AVR key its ased on the PT90 chipset, and I found it incredibly easy to flash with the latest firmwares. My PS3 Slim has a broken BD drive so it made it pretty easy for me to play some games that I already legally own, and I am not the only one happy to have my ps3 back, my cat Sparta is equally pleased.

That's so adorable! Also  for being able to play games again rather than having to spend money to repair or replace the system.

I am able to run the exploit on a TI-84 Plus and an iPod Nano 1g w/ Rockbox. My next test will be on a 3g iPhone once I can get iPhroid or whatever you need to deliver the payload. I like having options, the TI-84 was working well for me, but I can cut out a couple of steps by using the Rockbox method.

Hmmm my wife has an iPod touch, but she hasn't jailbroken it (yet!) I'm deeply tempted to try out the hack, mostly so that I can store games on the hard drive. Some of the games have obscenely long and annoying loading times (like God of War 3) so I'd like to buy a big 2.5" drive and play games off of it.

i just tried it with sansa mp3 player and rockbox. works great!
just wish theres a permanent hack so i dont have to flip the power switch button every time. load time is noticeably faster! and none of noise of the disc spinning.

wow that picture owns hard haha.

Jigkick anyone? PS3 was hacked was it not? I was in India when I read the Gaf thread about it. So can anyone summarize for me if and how it works, I'm back in the US now but I think it offers some interesting possibilities if Sony hasn't patched it yet.

It does work, it can be done with basically anything with a USB port (TI-84, android phone, iPhone), and Sony has already patched the console with the latest updates.
