Is the NV focus group member allowed to do marketing at AT?

As done here http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=30294140&postcount=2 by Keysplayr.

I am just asking if the rules changed.

The post above contradicts the first two statements http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=30265283&postcount=80

1) I'm not a viral marketer.
2) I'm not a marketer.
3) That video was marketing.
4) It annoyed me. Just as much as my posting a link to H benches annoyed you.
5) I posted a link showing how AMD has better things to concentrate on. Big time.
6) I've had enough of the way you post towards me.

I don't see the problem here. All Keys has done is offer his opinion. He hasn't told anyone to go buy this setup instead of the ATI card.

It was based on that Nexus article that says SLI 470 would give similar performance to the 5970:

A pair of HD 5870s, HD 5850s or GTX 470s are all available for less, and will offer similar levels of performance.

One might then assume that the 480 in SLI would beat the 5970.

As a matter of fact there are a couple other posters that shared the same opinion.

^ Please, consider the following quote from Wiki:
Among the first to write about viral marketing on the Internet was media critic Douglas Rushkoff in his 1994 book Media Virus: Hidden Agendas in Popular Culture. The assumption is that if such an advertisement reaches a "susceptible" user, that user will become "infected" (i.e., accept the idea) and will then go on to share the idea with others "infecting them," in the viral analogy's terms. As long as each infected user shares the idea with more than one susceptible user on average (i.e., the basic reproductive rate is greater than one - the standard in epidemiology for qualifying something as an epidemic), the number of infected users will grow according to a logarithmic curve, whose initial segment appears exponential.

Having said that I do not think the content of the post is incorrect but it appears to me as a marketing and steering a potential buyer towards NV.

By that same definition, no one may offer an opinion that states nVidia > ATI because the opinion may be shared with others. In fact, you state Keys even used actual facts. And yet you still have a problem with it? Your argument is that the facts are less relevant because Keys said it? How in the world does that make sense?

By becoming NV focus group member Keys made some promises and as you can see it's very hard for him to keep them.

Personally I would like to find out
- if Keys would consider breaking his relationship with NV so he can post whatever he wants without being accused of doing NV marketing, or
- if he will work harder to keep his promises and he will not post like this http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=30263335&postcount=42, or
- if by allowing him to post anything AT becomes less independent website.

That's all.

It seems as though there is at least one of these threads created per week complaining about the fact that Keys is a mod in the video forum.

I'll weigh in and say that I no longer post in there in large part because he is a mod and seems to be allowed to censor out whatever he feels isn't going to make NV look good.

I'm surprised that he was even made a mod to begin with. My guess is that NV has coerced AT into doing this.

I concur, I largely avoid the Video forum now, and I don't dare voice a conflicting opinion, for fear that I'll get banned. How he can be a mod there and be an NV focus group member is a real head scratcher. He seems like a nice guy, but he is in no way unbiased.

Evidence of censorship.
There are plenty of ATI fan boys that want to make an issue of Keys via opinion vs facts.
When thatat heasts up; they come crying to the forums because they were slapped. Not because of ATI - but because of their attitude.

He has to walk a fine line but like all Mods has to be allowed to express his opinions.

He could just as easily mod another forum and then he can post whatever he wants in the Video forum. Allowing someone to moderate a forum who has a biased opinion is the reason people come "crying" into this forum.

Disclaimer: Not a fan boy, owner of both ATI and nVidia products who has been following this drama for awhile. Just seems like a situation that's setup for problems.

It's called a conflict of interest, plain and simple. Anandtech should have never allowed it to happen, and now that they know he's a both an NV focus member and a mod, something should have changed.

If AT wants to keep their independent website reputation, they need to stop that kind of thing immediately. All it takes is a small group of people getting pissed and going to other forums and posting about the biased nature of the mod for AT to lose future hits.

I'm shocked it's been allowed to continue like that, regardless of his performance as a mod. It's a clear conflict of interest that should have been addressed.

Keysplayer obviously doesn't feel the need to address it. Which is fine, as far as that goes. But it SHOULD Have been addressed. I have absolutely no dog in this fight and have never had a run in with Keysplayer in any way. This sort of issue, however, impugnes a website's reputation very quickly.

How can facts be less relevant because of the messenger?

The answer is, they can't be less relevant.

The facts are only less relevant to the ATi fanboys who don't want to here them from a pro Nvidia user.

I notice in most of the threads that Keys participates in, he makes a good point to 4 or 5 Ati fanboys and they attack him with the usual, "hey you get free cards" or "did they pay you to say that" or "looking at you signiture"

Its the same users over and over.
Then when there personal attacks get reported ,THEY COME HERE TO CRY.

It's simple, when you make a statement, back it up with facts, argue your opinion, back it up with a link, and if your wrong, STFU and say your wrong.

The other option is the ignore option or report post.
Good day. 🙂

So you don't think his post is incorrect, you are just worried that it might steer a potential buyer to NVIDIA?

Obviously a focus group member is intented to help greater the cause. Whether it is blatant or viral, it I am sure is the point of the "focus group" members.

He shouldn't be a mod on a forum when you have economical ties to the manufacturer. This was almost a problem in PSU with BFG but they always provided reccomendations that weren't limited to their own brand

Anandtech's Tech section of the forums is about 10x less active than HardForums and others.

I know if I wanted to ask a technical question, I would be posting on Hard.

That's nothing when you compare it to the following.
It appears to me that when Keys says one thing and acts differently then his integrity is at question.
I hope he does it unintentionally and he does not have a good inner laugh, thinking he is Mr. Untouchable (because NV is behind him), at the expense of all the ownership, admins, mods and all of us here ate AT.

This is a feedback from one member but I believe I am not alone who thinks this way.

I really hate to say it cause he seems like a nice guy but there is definitely a conflict of interest going on. I don't mind it cause I love nvidia cards but if I was a ati fan it would turn me off with the pro nvidia feeling you get here. True most of that is because IMO nvidia is a better gpu company but it's pretty crazy when the mod is cheerleading for nvidia and happens to get free stuff from them. I wonder what they'll say about me since they can't call me an ati butt hurt fanboy since I own all nvidia gpu's? There are only 10-15 regular posters in videocard forum. Coincidence?

I have been to that particular forum segveral times.
All good information.
I have seen no conflict of interest.
But with that said what I also have seen is people who are the real ATI or NVidia fanboys always having something to complain about.
Seems like these people are never happy!!

Keysplayr is a good moderator who is fair and takes an active interest in his particular forum!!

The Conflict of Interest is obvious and I'm disappointed that some avoid admitting it. Makes me think NVidia is possibly paying for the arrangement.

Well, the pro nV feeling mostly comes from the two main shills who troll the place almost 24/7, cheerleading about anything related to the company (yeah, we all know who you are). Keys just makes it worse with biased modding and calling out people who have differing POVs.

I can see how the forum would be more popular if it weren't this way, but no one seems to want to fix the problem. So, sadly, I go elsewhere for GPU discussions.

Then I'll be a focus group member. Where do I sign up?

i think he meant paying anandtech for the privilege of having a paid for mod? or...?

however, if there is money to be given out, i would like to get on that list as well. i'm not really partial to either brand, but i could use some swag and cash.
