Is the internetz making people stupider?

I've been thinking about it. We started out debating evolution, and then climate change. Now these are complicated subjects on the surface but are still well researched and explained to where most people of average intelligence can understand the concepts.

But then we moved on to things like chemtrails and now anti vax movements. How stupid does one have to be to believe in this crap? Would these movements even exist without the internet? I wonder when we'll start debating on whether or not storks deliver babies.
And then there's the Sandy Hook conspiracy and the crisis actors. I seriously think that you'd have to be pretty far removed from reality in order to believe this crap.

But I see this in other things to like linkbait that just makes me cringe.... "This man barks like a chicken for 80 hours a day and the reason why will inspire you".

Or how often I try to sell something on eBay at a modest Buy it Now price and nobody buys it, so I put it up for auction and more often than not; the bidding exceeds the original Buy it Now price I was selling it for a week earlier.

Maybe Idiocracy was really a documentary.

With an ignorant and stupid population it's easy to spread ignorance to those who don't know better and don't understand when things are explained to them.

See, I saw this thread and figured it was going to be about people who can't remember their phone numbers anymore. 🙂

Internet makes it easier for crazy people to find each other and create an echo chamber. Also makes it easier for me to not bother remembering things that I can always look up if I need to.

I think it's more about just making everyone know what many have been thinking all along that they would never have been exposed to. IOW, the reasonable are now more aware of the unreasonable.

So true..

Multiple major environmental problems that were taken care off such as DDT, Lead, Ozone hole. Shit got done.

No you everyone who claims to know more then scientist.

Müller was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for his discovery of the high efficiency of DDT as a contact poison against several arthropods" in 1948.

You guys are retarded with the science is always correct, all the time worship.

Go science!

Whatever. They went from discovery of a problem with the product to banishment of the product in a mere 25 years. Science got things done pre-internet.

Remember when medical science pre-internet gave the world heroin as an effective cough, chest and lung medicine? Praised in numerous clinical trials?

This is fun and all guys, but can we stop being retarded? I know it's fun in a meta way, but seriously...

Science isn't a "thing" any more than democracy is a "thing", and both have changed plenty in the last seventy years.

Either of you have a better alternative?

Either of you have a better alternative?

Keep politics out of science so science can do its thing without morons like you trying to make it into some kind of "we're right ur wong" witch hunt.

ESPECIALLY before any given topic is fully understood.

Oh yea an alternative to science. Lets all go live in teepee's and go without vaccinations, drive hummers, burn literal barrels of oil for heat as we gather around for religious ceremonies. Is that what you're expecting? People like you are actually the stupid ones these days. The internet crusaders. The world is actually alot more level headed than as portrayed on the internet. The people linking wikipedia are the stupid ones. Absolutely. The good information isn't on the internet anymore. Google searching doesn't yield good information anymore, as the results are now highly commercialized. Everything worth your time is behind a paywall of some form. News articles have fallen from like 800 words to 300 words because of the decreasing attention span.

Well maybe not your time specifically but you know what I meant.

I'm pretty good at following where people got their ideas. "Anti-vaxxer" is definitely something that makes the rounds in facebook buzzfeed click-bait style "Science" articles totally irregardless of the actual vaccination issue. Our vaccination rate is 91% anyway. Any vaccine argument is slacktivism at its finest. Pretty sure there is a pediatrician in P&N who thinks I'm anti-vaccine right now for merely questioning the vaccine time table. Its that bad. The internet makes even a pediatrician that stupid. I would definitely want my kid to have a slightly stretched out vaccine schedule, but they would still get all their vaccines. And I'm automatically labeled an anti-vaxxer because of the rampant internet groupthink. IF my kid had the same vaccine schedule I had in the 1980's would it really be all that terrible?

ok

I Hate BuzzFeed. Maddox.

Note the date. Around the time this vaccine stuff really started becoming a news issue.

Some of her other articles filled with riveting stuff.

I don't think the Internet makes people "stupider" I think social networking sites and most forums make people "stupider."

There's a vast amount of knowledge on the Internet and if you surf the Internet on a daily basis and don't learn at least one thing from the Internet in a day you are doing it wrong.
