One was $67 and the other was 94.

Primarily, yes. Driven by the same supply vs demand dynamics. Until demand lets up, retail is going to be last in line again. FOMO makes people do stupid things. The result is we won't stop buying at derp prices. Be a lot cooler if we did.

I may be too harsh. I read the other day mainboard sales had dropped 50%, that's a positive if true.

The memory module I was using as a reference in the OP is now selling for £75 for 8GB (£150 for 2x8GB).

In the meantime the price dropped to £50 for 8GB (£99.99 for 2x8GB) then in the last few days went up to £63 for 8GB (£124.99 for 2x8GB).

I wonder if I'm going to see a repeat of the behaviour I've seen in recent years whereby an AM4 CPU like a 5600G went from a vaguely normal price (let's say £120), to suddenly doubling for a couple of weeks and then back down to the normal price, rinse and repeat.

I would suggest buying nothing RAM wise, when we look at the extreme volatility of some RAM stiks it s obvious that once the price collapse there s wanabee speculators who buy at a supposed low in the hope to sell at high prices, dont feed the scamers.

I was talking of regular RAM sticks of course, as for DDR3 you d be surprised by the number of PCs using this memory, i know many people who are on W8.1 with PCs that are roughly 10 years old, as long as they work for browsing, email, social media, Youtube and such basic usages they dont feel the need of buying something new.

I would have been scouring the market for DDR3 modules a fair bit this year if I hadn't stockpiled all the (useful, a module needed to be 4GB-1333 minimum) DDR3 modules from dead PCs in recent years. I'm getting low on DDR3 DIMMs now, I still have plenty of DDR3 SODIMMs.

We're not saying older platforms aren't still usable (although MS seems to think otherwise ). But rather there is little market demand for DDR3, except for the occasional upgrader who fell asleep between 2017-2025.

The issue is that the current inflation would end generating that old office PC will start to increase the prices more and more and be really expensive.

There is already a W11 backlash, not as big as I would have hoped, but as price and supply get increasingly problematic there will be even more debate and focus on the bloat holding people back from using their current systems to the full extent. Not sure if it will achieve change but we can hope...

Actualy DDR3 is still manufactured and sticks are sold as new by Corsair, Gskill and Kingston, and EXCellR8 is right about the OS overhead, W10 use at most 2.8-3GB idling but W8.1 is below 2GB while W7 was at 1GB, so someone with 8GB under W8.1 is more than comfortable for usual usages, if he has only 4GB all he need is another 4GB stick at previously 15-20€ and he s good for several years rather than spending 700-1000€ in a new PC, and moreover with current RAM gouged prices.

No offense, but it's silly the amount of focus you put on obsolete Windows versions and obsolete DDR3. I use my PCs for much longer than most people*, but I'm not going to run an EOL OS because it had a smaller base memory footprint.

If someone wants to buy small (i.e. 4GB) RAM sticks, there are plenty of used ones to be found.

* Currently I daily drive 2017 Kaby Lake, no hardware replacement plans. Linux makes it easy for geeks to use older systems comfortably. Unfortunately, Microsoft has different ideas on that.
