GOP is getting totally pantsed at their own party.
They're not used to an educated populace refusing to vote for a political party that is openly hostile to its interests.

And Fox pretending this is some win for republicans and more so for trump republicans. Yeah, like losing 2 to 1 is a victory. Go tell Rudy Giuliani that.

First, if the 34 point spread holds or even close to that, the polls were WAY off. They showed a 17 point spread. Wow, that is terrible. They seem to have under-estimated dem turnout. It's good that dems turned out for an off year this way.

Second, I WANT the repugs to say this one was rigged. Go ahead, I dare you. The notion that Elder really even had much of a chance given the partisan composition of the state, the over 50 approval of Newsom is absurd in and of itself. But a 30+ spread on the result? It strains credulity even more than Trump's lies about 2020 and makes them look even more like the clowns we already know they are.

Seriously, democrats need to hang this shit around the necks of every repug running for office next year. Make every one of them either renounce this crap or else say they support it. Which will hurt them anywhere outside of deep red districts and states. They can start with all 200 repugs who signed that amicus brief for that ridiculous Texas lawsuit which was ignored by their own SCOTUS with a 6-3 conservative majority.

Newsom was lucky we all received a good look at his alternative. My dislike for Newsom is nicely counterbalanced by the pure evil* piece of shit the republicans spewed up from the bowels of hell to run against him.

Looking at Kevin Paffrath with interest. Hope to see him on the ballot again sometime soon.

*Elder ran on:
reparations for slave owners
dismissing the CDC and Dr. Fauci
moon landing was a hoax
accused the military of pointing a radio telescope array at him
blamed the forest fire problem on a rabid pyro bear
removing sex education from schools
systemic racism is a lie
gravity is a newtonian hoax
the election is rigged against him

If that is republican leadership these days, no wonder they are all ffed up in the head.

With this spread, even a better repug alternative would still have yielded the same end result, just with a somewhat narrower margin.

But let's be serious here. There were many other repugs on that candidate list. Elder was chosen as the favorite because he is farthest to the right and closest to Trump.

Candidates like this are not aberrations any more. They are who conservative voters prefer. Even in a deep blue state where it makes no sense to not choose a moderate, he was their choice.

And just look at the 2016 primary. Down the stretch, it wasn't Trump v and more moderate candidate. It was Trump v Ted Cruz. Those were their number 1 and 2 choices. The more moderate candidates like Bush and Kasich never had a chance. What does that say about conservative voters?

Lol you're giving them too much credit. They will be stupid enough to still repeat the big lie and the Trumpards will eat it up

Doesn't matter what the Trumptards believe. This has nothing to do with them. 25% of the country buys "stop the steal." That is 60% of republicans, 20% of independents and 5% of dems.

In this country, there are still about 10-15% swing voters. In an election what matters is light red, purple and light blue states and districts. There are more swing voters in those states and districts than in more partisan places. And swing voters definitely do not agree with stop the steal BS. That is why I want them to keep repeating it, especially where it's as absurd as it is here.

I've looked at several county-by-county maps of the results go far (~65% reporting) and all of them, including Fox News, show the recall failing in several very rural, very conservative counties.

Results aren't fully computed in all those counties yet. Most are red but not deep red. It's possible that repug turnout was lower than expected. These guys don't vote by mail, and with the polls showing a blowout and Elder calling it rigged, I've got a feeling a chunk of them stayed home.

One of the big problems with liberals is their arrogance.

Victor David Hansen? Have you read his book "The Case for Trump"?

He's a fellow from the Hoover Institute. They are god's own arrogant assholes.

Given the notion that children are not really party affiliated how would you account for one child growing up liberal and another a Hoover Institute arrogant asshole? Please define arrogant asshole via the conditions that cause it so I can understand what you mean.

Since Newsom just won heck yeah the recall is fair. That was a little sarcastic. I'm glad that he won and I hope the recall system in CA is done properly. I'm a moderate or I think I am one but I don't lean in favor of having a Republican for CA governor.

It was not fair.
It was not fair to CA taxpayers who paid for the stupid thing.
It was not fair to all the people who had to volunteer to fight it.
It was not fair to CA citizens who need their government focused on issues with the EDD, homelessness, Covid, etc. Instead everything was distracted with this stupid thing.

It was a massive and stupid waste of time and money.

Fox saying that Newson had nothing to offer. Only running on an anti-Trump theme. Comparing Larry to Trump. Well.... that was the point, Fox News. Sometimes people in "some" states prefer not to burn everything down considering the wild fires are doing a pretty good job already.

I guess the right wing media just don't get. Insanity is not nor has ever been a political platform to run on. That is, unless you live in a southern state. Fox is shocked that Californians would turn down insanity for sticking with sanity.

I was surprised that Elder conceded without using the rigged card, however I would bet a day at Blacks Beach that Trump called and urged Elder to cry foul and claim millions of votes came in from ballot factories ran by Tom Hanks and George Clooney.

Lesson learned—when more people vote, Republicans lose. They’re trying to fix that problem of voting though…

Scanning some of the national pieces there is somehow a fair amount of "Dems in disarray" after Newsom utterly trounced the recall and people trying to draw lines to 2022/24. One of the problems with an east coast centric national media (I mean one almost entirely confined to NYC and DC) is that most of them don't care to even try understanding the dynamics at play and just want a narrative. Little mention of the Trump judge who gave the recall supporters four more months to gather signatures or how low the bar is for triggering a recall so that people can contextualize these events.

Conspiracy theory: This was never intended to succeed, it was intended to be a non-polling-based barometer of post-Trump voting lines.

Many major media outlets often seem to be the NYTimes Pitchbot in real life.
