This is interesting. I'm 24 and have been having memory problems for the past year or so. I wonder if I have mad cow?

Cow is my favorite food. I haven't died yet.

MCD doesn't appear right away or even within months. It can take years to show up.

MCD death in the us=3
Heart Disease = 652,091
Cancer=559,312

fear is misplaced. its just more food hysteria.

I've been eating cow for 20+ years (I dont know when my parents gave me my first happy meal, but I'm sure I was young). I haven't died yet. I'm still not concerned.

hahah, yup, it's a huge scam. The coverup of Mad Cow Disease deaths! It's even deeper than the fake moon landing....

The US policy concerning Mad Cow is Head-in-the-sand. If you suspect a Cow has the disease, kill-bury, don't have it tested. IOW, no one wants to know whether the disease is present in the US. Of course not all cows show signs of the disease, so you can do the Math on what that means.

France took a different approach to the disease, 100% Testing. All cows were tested and no meat from a cow was released into the Supply Chain until the tests came back Negative. They were finding 70+ cows/year who had the disease, but the meat in the store was 100% safe.

Canada wanted to go to 100% testing after the Canadian Beef Industry took a hit over that first Positive test, but rescinded after pressure from the US.

Those who say "I've been eating beef for all those years. I'm still alive and kicking. No worries." remind me of the British minister who claimed that beef is all safe. After 10 years, his best friend's daughter died of mad cow dieases.

Simply put, even if you got mad cow dieases now, you wouldn't find out about 10 years later. Even if you die from it, you may never find out as it's mostly handled as CJD when it's really vCJD.

...so I should never eat cow again in fear of tainted beef?

I haven't been killed by a car accident yet, but that could sure happen still. A lot more likely than MCD too.

I'm not saying that you should stop eating beef. Hell, I fully know the danger of vCJD but I do eat the shit out of it.

What I'm saying is that the regulation must be set and obeyed. The biggest problem is that the regulation is not effective and most of the farmers aren't even following it. The danger is too much.
In the end, in terms of your example, what I'm saying is that we must starting having traffic signals and road rules because we're driving on the road like maniacs.

The USDA's policies toward protecting us are a joke. The OP is pretty much right on the mark.

Here's one: Back when Europe was having all the problems with Mad Cow in their herds, they said, "whoa, *maybe* there's something in all this ground up cow that we're feeding to our cows that's ultimately responsible for spreading this disease. That's it, from now on, no more feeding ground up cow leftover parts to cows."

The manufacturers of ground up leftover cow parts said, "aww, shit. Now what are we going to do with all this excess ground up leftover cow parts??"

And, the U.S. happily imported it for a number of years following its ban in Europe.

All the rules are written to favor big beef industry, not small farms. And, unfortunately, it's the big industry practices that are putting us more at risk. At least for the OP, suggested interview/video:

She also wrote a book: Mad Sheep; it was a pretty good book, I think I finished reading it in 2 nights. (edit: I even have a signed copy :) )

Actually they have no idea how long it can sit dormant. Though most experts agree that it can lie dormant for 20+ years at the minimum. It most likely is LONGER. As I previously stated, my mother in-law died from a confirmed case of CJD disease. We've done the studying (and yes I and my entire family still eats red meat. That does not mean that the US practices are beyond idiotic.

The USDA recalls also bug the shit out of me... "USDA recalls 100,000 pounds of beef! Public is outraged at contamination, eminently grateful for the USDA!"

So... 100,000 pounds of beef of course being a few hours worth of processing at a major plant, not to mention that it was all consumed about two months prior to the recall.

Meatpackers industry long ago made USDA its bitch... All you need is the appearance of due diligence.
