Is the 8800gts-gtx that much better?

Yes.

I'm a gamer, mostly playing BF2 and 2142. With BF2 my 1900XT-512 (oc'ed) was perfect. With BF2142 however the settings I ran netted me between 35 and 60 (vsync) fps. Thats everything on high, 4hqaa and 8af (at 1680x1050). Usally it was in the 40s, which I wasn't happy with. Made a real difference when strafing in heavy fire fights.

Now, with the 8800GTX I'm at X8HQ and X16AF forced Trilinear. Frames never drop below 60 (well.. 59-60)

I die a lot just looking at things 🙂

Image quality is also better with 8800 series cards. X1900 series do look better than 7900 series, but I had to look for the difference. With 8800 series, you can't avoid seeing the difference. Stronger contrast and hue, not to mention the near-perfect AF, I learned what 'image quality' is for the first time. 8800 series' image quality make that of 7900 series a joke.

As a gamer I'm confused with what you're talking about. What's "4hqaa?" and "X8HQ?" The term "HQ" corresponds to AF, not AA. And if you have everything on high but your AF is at 8x then I'm sorry but you don't have everything on high.

I'm assuming you're meaning "4xAA" and "8xQAA?"

Agreed, this is a great time for owning an 8-series card... Instead of asking "how fast?" or "do you need it?", people should be asking "how much eye candy?". The 8-series gives me room to play with IQ and still get high FPS like I have never had before, I really am impressed. 4xAA/16xAF benchmarks just don't give you the whole story.

The new control panel does have a Quality setting for AA.

And everything on high means everything in the games control panel (Dynamic shadows, geometry, view distance) is set to max, or high. It really has nothing to do with AA once you get past x4 as thats the maximum allowed by the BF2 engine (x6 with ATI). If you want higher you need to force it with the video drivers.

Well, this statement seems correct at the first glance but it's a tad misleading IMHO. Even @12x10 on a 19" LCD, the difference will be obvious. First off, you can activate more eye candy - like 8*MSAA in many games. Besides, you can play some games with all the eye candy at good FPS - for instance, Oblivion. On my X1900XTX, this game runs fine in 12x10 with 4*AA and 16*AF with HDR (Chuck patch) but some outdoor locations are far from smooth. Not even mentioning games like NWN2 with its crappy engine killing even the most powerful computers or Gothic 3. NfS Carbon in max settings is also pretty demanding. The 8800 GTX (probably also GTS) makes a huge difference in these games.

I got one also and the difference is amazing. Not only speed, IQ. Crusader, Lopri and Nitro are right on the spot.

Oblivion now runs like melted butter at 70 FPS forcing 16AA 16AF at 1920x1200.
Add to that:
1) No shimmering
2) Silent cooler

I also have never had a card like that before. I should have saved my money on the previous generation and went straight into this one. I don't know what ATI will bring next year but I guess this is the one upgrade that will last long. I don't need more for the coming months.

I jumped from a x1800xt to a 8800 GTS. I game at 1680x1050 with 4x FSAA+8x Aniso and my framerate is still way a head of what I was getting my old card running at 1280x800 using the same settings. For reference, the D3 timedemo clocks in at 118 fps.

FYI, I use odd resolutions due to my widescreen LCD.

It depends on the game. In some games like Oblivion and HL2 the gts is much faster. In others like FEAR, Quake 4 and Chaos Theory it's about the same.

Not to mention you can overclock the GTS to perform like the GTX on air. Even an overclocked X1900 couldn't touch the overclocked GTX.

I've seen plenty of comparisons between the 7 series and x1k series...and I saw no IQ difference. It's really just a big mental problem.

Oh, so ATI has better AF/AA...usually people don't use it as high as it can get. And it's also not noticeable unless you stop in the game and strain your eyes to find a difference between the two cards.

The whole ATI>Nvidia in IQ is a myth. If it's true, it's so minimal that no one should really care in their right mind (because no one should really notice it).

Especially so since the Nvidia now has superior IQ.

Two overclocked X1900s could barely beat a stock GTX. 😕

Add in SLi, and theres nothing in the market that touches this thing. ITs simply impressive. Ill be getting one very soon~~. Cant WAIT like literally. Wish college were over.

I haven't tried an X1900 card, but the performance I get from my GTX probably means a resounding yes to the OP's question. Great IQ, great FPS, silent.

The GTS is an all around better card than any card on the market today. Varying from dead even to a ton faster. But oh, the IQ......... The GTX is just hammer time.
