Is the 7800GTX 512 really worth it (for my rig)

I am contrusting a new gaming rig, AMD Opteron 270 (posibly 275 OEM), A8N32 SLI-Deluxe, and a Viewsonic VP191B (or a VP930b since they might have stoped making the VP191Bs).

Now with the above rig, running at 1280-1024, do I really need a 7800GTX 512 to run games like FEAR with some eyecandy turned up (like 4xAA and 8xAF?).

Or should I just get a 7800GTX 512 anyway, so I can brag even more? I know everybody will say "go for the 512 one", but my buget is limited and a regular 7800 GTX 256 is pushing it, though I might be able to get a 512 one.

7800GTX 256 is fine or even a GT unles you play at really really high res. I cant really see paying $150-$200 more for just an oced card with more ram.

For FEAR I would say yes, if you want to use AA at that resolution (and even then the performance isn't too great, only 45fps according to AT). A 256 GTX is probably fine for most other games.

The 270 won't work in the A8N32 board though.

512mb one is not worth it for the money. I mean 750 dollars for like maybe MAYBE up to 10 or so fps more than an x1800xt. For 1280 reso I suggest getting a 256mb GTX for the money. If you want futureproof though, go with the 750 dollars, although it is a huge loss in money for not much more fps. I mean I am considering a dual 7800gt for my new rig. It is about 680-700 dollars for it and it much faster than the 512mb gtx for 50-100 dollars less. I was even going to go on that evga deal so i could get 2 7800gt's for 680 plus an sli motherboard. Very very good deal. Maybe consider a 7800gt sli? It is much faster than a single 512mb GTX in most cases, such as fear and when you have aa and af on. If you are planning on going with the 512mb GTX then definately consider a 7800gt sli, much faster with aa and af and cheaper.

Yeah, I also think two GTs are a better deal than a 512MB GTX. I'll probably get those if the 512's prices haven't fallen by much in a month or so.

Evga even has their program still running. You can get a 7800gt for 359 at newegg, the one that has 445mhz core and 1070 mem, that comes with a free sli motherboard. (Well not free, you are essentially paying 50 dollars for it.) Then you can buy another 7800gt for 300 dollars now with 20 dollar mail in rebate. It is also the 445mhz core and 1070 memory. That adds up to around 680 shipped or maybe a little bit less. This sli setup can cream one 7800gtx 512mb when aa and af are on. Check out the anandtech benches. 70 dollars cheaper too, AND you get an sli motherboard!

Excluding FEAR, you can run any game maxed out at that resolution with a single 7800 GT. Those cards can usually be OCed to get the same performance as a stock GTX.

In my humble opinion, the 7800 GTX 512MB is part of the list of the most over-rated / hyped GPU.

It's not worth it.

Those 256MB GTX's do the job very well, and some over-clocked models are just plain superb, such as the ASUS Top version.

And the extra 256MB on the 512MB model does pretty much nothing.

nVidia consumers should just wait for G80. Going from a GTX 256MB to G80 when it comes out ... now that would be nice. But when I see those consumers going from a 256MB GTX to a 512MB one ... oh it burns. But hey, it's their money that's wasted, not mine, so I don't care what they do really.

Like others have mentioned above, a 7800GT will do everything you want except in FEAR. The 512MB beast is a sweet card but it is overpriced right now.

Yeah a 7800gt rocks hard. I may get another in a few months when the prices drop even lower. I play bf2 and cs:s and
its fine even if I have to lower some detail. Im sure glad I think f.e.a.r sucks. I wouldnt even think about upgrading for
a ****** game like that. HL:2>f.e.a.r. any day.

Agreed. If I could grab one for 650 or 600 I'd probably do it depending on whether r580 will be out in January, but 750 is a joke. It would mean I'd still have spent a net 425 or so AFTER selling my GTX for 350, at a loss of 250.

My rig Runs FEAR at 1680x1050 with no problems at all with everything at max minus SS, 0XAA, 16AF. I get 33 min., 54 ave., and 105 max. I can use 2xAA but sometimes I get a little slowdown, and I do mean just a little. Fear seems like one of those games that is silky smooth as long as you are above 35ish or so frames per second. Games like quake and doom need higher fps to be smooth. At least this is my opinion
