Back to the subject the last time the U.S. took initiative in stopping a potential genocide or ethnic cleansing the U.N. was involved along with other European Nations in helping end it in and around Kosovo.


There's not much that the U.S. can do on it's own without breaking the bank....
The past decade pretty much guaranteed that.

TH, we spent crap tons of our own money (well, China's) and poured blood from our own people over there to give the populace a chance at unf*cking themselves. If they can't be bothered and it's not important to them, and this is what they want, then so be it. You can't enact policies and teachings, have cultural norms, that are against modern western standards, and then expect the western countries to come bail you out from what you've allowed (and in many cases happily embraced/pushed for) to happen. The Iraqi's, and the Leadership they sent to be their representatives, chose...and now they're living with the consequences of their decisions.

Does stopping genocide benefit us in any way, like say, control of middle east oil fields? If so then yes, I'm sure the US (and Obama) would love to help! Just like Bubba wanted to spread democracy and topple evil dictatorships.

Why? Last night was one of the handful of times in the last 6 years I've actually agreed with our President. ()🙂

I'll support limited action but the OP mentions "potential genocide". We can help a little bit but it's hard to imagine being able to remove the core threat at a distance. Well we could nuke them I guess but that wouldn't be viewed as a nice thing.

part of me would be OK carpetbombing all known ISIS deployments. (Well, all of me would be OK with that). Then, the other part of me knows that continuing to prop up this utterly-failed state is a very bad idea in the long run.

I think the Admin, and all of Congress feel the same way. Any public posturing otherwise is just political show, that only imbeciles like the OP swallow as a truthful accounting of what our elected officials actually want.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind throwing full support to the Kurdish state, as well as obviously protecting US deployments in the area. The Kurds are the only viable nation in that part of Iraq, now, with any legitimate hope of establishing a stable democracy.
