Ok, I just pulled the trigger on the NewEgg $66AR Abit IP35E deal. motherboard, check.
Also I already have the x1950 Pro PCI-e card, and Antec EA500. GPU & PSU, check.

This leaves only CPU and RAM. I'm assuming that I should get 2x2GB ram if I go with Quad core Q6600. Or would 2x1GB suffice? There's that talk of 1GB per core.

For some reason I'm still looking at E2180 prices since it's half that of Quad for this deal. I'd expect Penryn would reduce Q6600 pricing even more, but Intel really can't lower E21xx pricing down by much. Long term value wise, you don't loose as much out on E21xx.

Bottomline question is then would Q6600 still be performance competitive in the world of 45nm Penryns?

What do you think?

i was thinking the same thing. i bet after this weekend, there won't be any B3's left though, which is a good thing.

you could always pick up this deal, and if you get a B3, try to return it for exchange. i'm not sure how that would work, maybe they test it and will tell you that it works fine so you can't exchange it. in that case you'd be left with the option to get your money back or live with the B3.

There's not much benefit with a Q6600 at this time except for some games and raw video crunching. An overclocked C2D north of 3.0GHz is more than enough for most users in the next 12 months. E21x0 is a much better deal if you can engage between $60 and $70.

My favorite RAMs for the IP35-E is Kingston N5 1.8V DDR2 667 or 800. No problem running four sticks at 1.8V default. 667 can easily achieve 400MHz with 2.0-2.1Vdimm (good enough for 9x or higher multi CPUs). 800 is good for a minimum of 450MHz at 2.1V/4-4-4-12-2T. These are high quality modules, so you normally don't see them with rebate.

The main advantage of Peryn is higher core speed if you plan to overclock. Performance is within a few % of Q6600 at the same core speed.

Is there a huge $155 rebate with this or is the $200 the price you pay out of the door? I read on the add "$200 after savings", not sure if that means a $155 rebate from the usual price of $355 ish

They should have about 40 q6600's per store. Space is limited due to the size of the cage where the high $$ stuff is locked up. I'm still curious if anyone has tried the q6600 with the ecs board; they ran this special before with a bare cpu, and the price was $268. If someone has actually run with this board, please chime in. It's going to be so cold and windy tomorrow that I may skip standing in line. The earlier they open, the longer you have to stand in the cold. For years, they gave out free coffee and doughnuts around 5:30, but I haven't been to the last 2.

So I get to my Atlanta Fry's at 4:00am and there's already a line from the front doors that goes around one side of the building and ends behind the building somewhere. And Fry's is a HUGE building. The people lucky (or dumb) enough to be at the front of the line are in and out of tents, sleeping bags, and lawn chairs.

The one thing that would have gotten me out of bed was to score a G0 Q6600 for $200 bucks. The mobo was icing. Here I am at home, about to go back to bed..

the mobo is not goin gto go for $40. it barely goes for $20 on ebay before fees and such.

basically use the board for a build later or in an emergency. its barely worth selling.

i thought abuot going to frys for this. but seeing as i'd have to camp out... and get up early forget it.

if anyone goes during the day tomorrow let me know how many your fry's had left so I know if an afternoon trip would be worth it.

I'm a SLACR!!

With a Fry's five minutes away, I had to go back up after the line died down. I was in and out in 30 minutes with a G0 stepping and the mobo to boot. :D

Thanks OP for posting your question. I love AT...

* Edit, just found out local Fry's is open at 5am.

Damn, for years I've made fun of the fools who get up early to shop on Black Friday.

And you still should. The most ridiculous day of the year. Dedicated to annoying and frustrating customers, and bringing out their "dark sides". I went out two years ago on BF, just to see what it was like. Not to buy anything. Hey, I was awake. And OMFG do people get nasty in those stores. Always just short of coming to blows.

For the pittance of money saved (supposedly saved) on this day, it is no where near worth that kind of aggravation.

Online black friday deals on the other hand, AWESOME. ;)

Went to two stores in S Cal. No go @ 4am. Min 400 in line @ each location. Probably 600, but I ain't gonna stop to count. Only a few will get it at a time. Those at the front are probably Fleabay Scums. All the good stuffs will be OOS within the first hour.

If you show up at the open, then it will probably take 1 hour to get in.

Managed to score two Logitech QuickCam Communicate Deluxe units from Amabomb for $38 out-the-door. Add $50 rebate to offset the wasted gas this morning.

Happy hunting.

I skipped Fry's this year to buy an LCD tv. My local HEB here in tx had a 15 inch HD lcd for only $99.95. It even had a qam tuner for hd and analog. Couldn't make it back to Fry's but I'm sure you can probably score a case or motherboard combo deal until noon.

Is this limit-1-per-customer? B&M only? What's to stop someone from buying up every single one and eBaying them for a tidy profit, say $50 or so per CPU ?

I don't they put a limit on it. A guy in front of me had at least 20 ECS motherboards in his basket, with paperwork in hand to make his claim for whatever accompanied them in the cage at checkout. It was an interesting experience today. My first time doing a B&M Black Friday.

Yes, jmmtn4al, it was for real. I asked the clerk to go get the processor before ringing me up and there it was, retail box G0 stepping. It's running my rig right now... :)

had to bite the tounge off this one.

The New 45nm die chips are rolling in next month. Also im going on skulltrail so it would mean i dont have a board for the extra quad, and im not really interesting in buying new hardware.

But yeah, definitely a Q6600 G0 is worth 200 dollars.
