The 360 has a 12x DVD-ROM drive which is decently speedy, and incredibly loud, but has less overall capacity.
The PS3 has a 1x Blu-ray drive which is quite a bit slower than the PS3, but is much quieter and much bigger.
- Fast and small vs. slow and big.

I am pretty sure BD drive is 2x.

Is the slow speed of the drive the reason why the PS3 has mandatory hard drive installs on a lot of their games?

yup. The other trick is to duplicate data across the disk.

PS1. PS2 and PS3 all have the slowest loading times for their generations. I actually stopped playing "Bully" whe it was on the PS2 because of the slow loading. Picked it up a few months ago for the 360 just so I can actually play it without having the time to cook a meal while it loads. :)

I guess theyre basing the 2x on rotational speed vs. DVD and not just naming the initial speed 1x then? Is that how DVD did it - ie does a 1x DVD drive spin at the same speed as a 1x CD-ROM?

Either way, the BR drive is significantly slower than the 12x DVD, and its the reason for the forced installs. Installs arent necessarily a bad thing IMO, as the end result can be overall faster than a 12x DVD alone, but the fact that theyre *forced* is a real issue.

The PS3 2x drive operates at a constant speed regardless of the location on the disc. The constant is roughly equivalent to the inner tracks of a DVD disc on the XBox 360 12x. A lot of games place critical data on the outside tracks so that they load more quickly on a traditional DVD drive, which is equivalent to a 4-6x blu-ray drive in speed.

Could be, but there is a good chance Sony (and MS) will follow Nintendo's lead and make the PS4 and 720 be just "more of the same" using engineering duct tape.

For the PS4 they'll probably have a DX10.1 class GPU with streams, but fully compatible with the PS3's GPU either via hardware or drivers. 2-3 general cores instead of 1, and 12 SPEs.

The "720" might have 5-6 general cores, and a GPU with 2-4 times the unified shaders.

All of which means that if Sony and MS do what I expect developers will go into PS4 and 720 development already knowing how to get the most out of the consoles.

Many people (myself included) said the same about the PS2, but look how that turned out.

God of War 2 came out 7 years after the PS2 came out and 4 months after the PS3 came out.

They are both "inferior" to any mediocre PC. Shit... I thought Gears of War ran @ 1080p!! It looks fucking sweet regardless. It's all about the games anyways & in that department, including many others, the 360 is just better. Saying either system is superior based on what 1 or even a few games run natively at is clearly retarded.
