Question: Are Pentium 4-M and Pentium 4 exchangeable for my laptop SONY VAIO PCG-GRZ530?

This is the deal.

I have a SONY PCG-GRZ530, which has a Pentium 4 SL6GS 2.4GHz inside. It is a very old one. For some reason, one pin of it is broken.

I checked the Page 4 of the service manual, which shows SONY PCG-GRZ530 comes with Intel 845MZ chipset. I checked Intel website and it shows Intel 845MZ supports Pentium 4-M.

Now the question becomes, is there anyone knowing if I can put a Pentium 4-M in the laptop to make it work?

Your any helpful comments are greatly appreciated!

BTW, both are Socket 478

they have different voltage requirements, so it depends on your vrm. the one you have is 1.525v while the p4-m is a 1.3v.

If the P4-M is lidless (without a heat spreader) than the heat-sink won't fit properly with a desktop processor which has one.

P4-M has no heat spreader while P4 has.

P4-M generates much less heat. This is also the reason I want P4-M instead, if they can be exchangeable.

Look in the intel white papers to see what pin is broken. Nine out of ten times, the CPU will run fine, there's a lot of redundancy.

But yeah, I wouldn't do it. Considering the TDP of the Pentium 4 is almost double, never mind that the heatsink might not fit properly over the IHS, you could be looking at some major cooling issues.
