Is owning a shuriken really a felony in California?

Is possessing one a crime, or is it just carrying one around that's a crime? I was considering shipping it back, but from what I've been reading, I guess I'd better leave it here.

Thanks for the link.

That blows. I would've hung it up on a wall, but I guess that would make me a dangerous criminal.

I'm pretty sure you can own one. You just can't carry it around in public or anything. There's plenty of people who own swords, nanchakus and all that jazz for display in their homes.

edit: Maybe not then. Personally, I wouldn't sweat too much over it...unless you expect your house to get raided by the police back the states.

I wouldn't sweat it if I'd gotten it back in the States, but I'd have to fly with it in my luggage or mail it in a box. Either way, customs could get a look at it, and that could be bad...

That's not strictly true- I know there's an exception for martial arts practitioners, so it can't be that strict.

I wouldn't worry about it. You're not going to jail because the cops heard from an anonymous tip that you had one, and then got a warrant to search your house.

I mean, we're talking absinthe illegal, not napalm illegal.

This is CA we're talking about. They are afraid of anything.

I've taken swords from China through customs without a hitch before. They don't care much so long as it's not a firearm or in your carry-on. They can easily be classified as a "relic" which is often on the exemptions list.

There's probably even less of a chance problem if you mail it back.

edit: If they DO care, they'll likely just confiscate it and send you on your way.
