you guys do realize that this game might be on the path to becomming a killer Application. as those of us who bought this game on PC also had to buys new video, cards, extra ram, , better cpu.

at forums, some have also bought a new pc just to play this game.

when was the last time you had to spend $500-$1,000 in upgrading to play a game that costs $60??
. i love oblivion..........................

i know OBLIVION runs fine on avg computers, and feels great, but in my opinion what makes the game standout is the graphics engione and the lightning and the physics. you cannot truly appreciate the game without most of the details turned on. the graphics just adds to the realism and the feel of the gameplay which is what makes it as good as it is.

Analogy:
its just like comparing a good vodka to a cheap vodka. both of them would get the job done and make u drunk, but the difference is the taste and the feel of the russian vodka.

(See below link on the vodka wars)

i understand that older generation video cards run this game just fine, that is because they do not have the advanced shaders and the hdr to deal with.

less details= faster performance, but also
less details= less realism of gameplay

LORD OF THE RINGS ANALOGY
now imagine if the LORD OF THE RINGS movie was made by warner brothers, and the kind of bad job they are doing with editing, Nowimagine if the whole (all 3 of them) LORD OF THE RINGS series was condensed and edited into one movie of 3 hours just like what they are doing with harry potter moveis. would you really like it?

its all in the details my friend

its a trade off that many of us cannot bear and hence the need to upgrade to something better for details.

I'm building a whole new system for Oblivion. It's almost four years since my last system build though so it's time for an upgrade anyway. I'm just lucky that when I'm planning to build it in June I'll have plenty of cash to spend on it and two months off to make the most of it.

They're not buying the hardware for this game, they're buying it earlier than they would for this game. Unless of course if as soon as they're done playing Oblivion they throw all that hardware in the dumpster. But, I do know what you're talking about where a game is the tipping point for your upgrade choices. Pretty neat.

it looks and runs GREAT on my midrange system. The GAMEPLAY is awesome . . . the gfx is just the 'icing' on this awesome 'cake'. ;)

and WB did make LotR :p

[indirectly]

i'd like to see the 3-hour condensed version of LotR . . . 15 hours is a bit long for one sitting]]

Probably the last time alot of people upgraded at once was when we were waiting for DIII and HL2.

i know, harry potter is 1 book per movie.

Before shooting the 3rd movie, the director had requested warner brothers if they could make two movies of 2 hours each, sic=nce they could not put in the details as the books are getting bigger and fitting all of it in would be impossible.

Warner brother refused and now the 3rd and 4th harry potter movies are nothing but a horrible cut job even though the movie is so goos, it leaves a lot of the main storyline out

but unlike doom 3 or half life 2 which would last 10-15 hours, this game is specially attractive because you can play this game for ages and still not have finished it.

its about the percieved benfit that users think about before buying anything. if the buy a high end gpu now, the would get atleast a 150-200 hours of satisfaction and gameplay instead of 10-15 hours from hl2 or doom 3.

True but thats not what you asked, you just said upgrade for any $60 game, though I would never pay $60 for a game since you could get any of those games for ~$40 if you looked a little bit. While I agree with you about actual play time alot of people still did upgrade for DIII and HL2.
I probably have put 200 or so hours into CS:S which came with my HL2. soo...
I personally get really bored with solo games now adays but I will probably pick up oblivion up soon enough.

I upgraded my videocard to play Call of Duty 2. Being able to properly run Oblivion was a bonus. :p

Went from a Pentium 3 733 MHZ, 64 MB of RAM, and a GeForce 2 to what I have now. Mostly to play this game.

All you have left to buy is a video card. I'd recommend 1900xt and make into 1900xtx+

The hype on this game is incredible. Now it's a "killer app"? Buying brand new hardware just so that you can run this game at fashion-friendly resolutions? If you look at it in detail for gameplay, and compare it honestly with all that's currently available and has been available in the past, it's not that great. A bit different, interesting, yes. A great game? IMO, no.
