rebels haven will be one of you best sources for "custom" and factory Biostar bioses. Been using their stuff since my first 6100-939 build. Polygon's web site would be a nice companion to this one for Biostar fans.

So far it appears (from what I've read and friends that are running them) the Biostar 790 series works well with PIIs....my TA790GX XE likes it's 720BE!

I was on the market for x3 720 last month. I have Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5. I knew it was compatible, but didn't know, if I could overclock well. Couldn't find an answer anywhere on the web. So I did buy an AM3 mobo and DDR3 anyway. No regrets now, but I tested the old mobo out anyway. Was able to hit 3.6Ghz easy. Didn't try higher. Hopefully this will index on google for all who search. AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE overclocked to 3.6Ghz on Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5.

The ASUS M3N72-D (nForce 750a SLI) works great with my Phenom II X4 810 in my HTPC, not sure the BIOS, I'll update later when I check it, but it was out of the box from Newegg. By the by, HybridPower is working with my other system's "old" 9800GTX on Vista x64, that was one concern I was had before I purchased the board (whether nvidia was still supporting it or not, they are for now and I hope it continues).

Hope this helps somebody!!!

I really wish Newegg would put another search feature in to filter boards by PhII support...

The way I have been doing it is to select AMD Motherboards and then choose "AM3" for the CPU Socket Type.

Or the most obvious is to choose the "CPU Type" drop down and select "Phenom 2".

You can also set the "Memory Standard" to DDR3 but some AM2+ Phenom 1 motherboards do support DDR3 as well.

You can do all of this under the "Advanced Search" option.

Here is an interesting motherboard that does happen to be compatible:

The J&W MiniX
http://www.jwele.com/motherboard_detail.php?419

It doesn't officially list AM3 support but after talking with their support staff I verified that the newest BIOS update adds support for Phenom II X2, X3 and X4 processors.

I am currently running this board with a Phenom X3 720 at stock speed. One word of warning is to not use a processor with a TDP over 85w as the board itself does not support it.
This is a great board for anyone wanting to make a very small gaming system. I'm running this in a silverstone mitx case with a 300w power supply and using a ATI 4850 to give it some decent gaming prowess.

Although I've heard many people with the same issues, some have reported that it works fine. If you like experimenting, I say give it a try. If you're like me, and want to plug and play, don't do it until a BIOS update is available. But from what evidence I can gather, Asus is doing no BIOS updates for any AM2 based boards to support Phenom II.

John

I just picked up a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P and a Phenom II X2 550 BE. I was able to unlock the chip to 4 cores with this MB and the F5 bios. I had the same Asus board (mentioned above) previously and didn't think it'd work w/ the new chips so it's good to see that I made the right purchase -- not that it would matter to the wife....

I'm currently running my Phenom II 920 on a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P and it worked out of the box. I also know it works on the XFX 750i SLI out of the box as well.

any input on the performance decrease in gaming when movng from HT3.0 to HT1.0 as a result of running a AM2+ CPU on a AM2 motherboard?

Phenom II X3 710 + Asrock AOD790GX/128M works with BIOS 1.3 or later. (Functions with earlier BIOS too, but detects processor incorrectly.)

ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe + Phenom II 940

I have to say yes. Update to BIOS 2205 or higher. I had this BIOS version installed prior to installing a Phenom II 940. Dropped in booted correctly first time. BIOS picked it up and reported it correctly as a Phenom II 940, Running 4x 2GB sticks of DDR2-800 RAM in unganged mode, runs flawlessly under every situation so far.

This board even overclocks fairly well for being somewhat older. I've actually got my chip running under-volted @ 1.250 stock 3.0GHz 100% stable under Vista x64. Even cool & quiet works like it should. This board + Phenom II 940 = a noticeable and appreciated upgrade from my old 6000+ Windsor.

I'm not certain if AM3 chips work very well on this board. but AM2+ Phenom II's are a GO! w00t!

Hello i am new to this forum

Works, but I'm cautious:

PII X4 940 is working fine so far at stock. Stress testing with OCCT just to check for temps. I'm kind of afraid to overclock it much though because of the 125W TDP (and previous non-support of 125W Phenom I CPUs).

Note: this is the board with the crazy NB temp readings. With the PII running the NB at 1.8 GHz up from 1.0 GHz with an X2, the temps are soaring!

i have the same mobo and cpu
can you say how much exactly soars the temps
i have 55-60c idle

I tried calling Gigabyte about support for the MA790FXT-UD5P and the 965 C2. I checked the CPU support list and it says it supports it with an F6 bios. But, I have no idea which bios the mobo will ship with. Will it still boot with an older bios? How stable on an older bios would it be if it did boot? The Gigabyte phone representative was essentially useless, he said it would "um probably" support it out of the box, but it "um probably wouldn't be stable" so I should "um probably update the bios right away". He clearly had no idea what he was talking about (I might try calling again tomorrow to see if luck can get me a better representative).

Then I thought I'd scour Newegg reviews and filter the search for those who tried to pair the motherboard with a 965. It looks like hit or miss. Some people claim it worked flawlessly out of the box, some said it was great with an easy bios update (though one guy claimed the bios update was a huge pain), and for some others it didn't work regardless. Just great. I'm thinking a lot of those that didn't work were DOA mobos, but you can never know for sure.

I wish AMD had devised an easier method of pairing an AM3 CPU with an AM3 compatible motherboard. My 965 is already on order, since that is the CPU I want. But I've yet to order a motherboard. I need an DD3 790FX motherboard since I want the dual x16 lanes, but I want a motherboard that I know will work. Decisions, decisions.

Anyway, I'll prob just order the Gigabyte and worst case scenario a local parts store could just swap in an older Phenom/Athlon and flash the bios for me for $30...

Edit: Ended up ordering a MSI 790FX-GD70, since that actually seems to support the 965 right out of the box (sorry Gigabyte). Hopefully this one works out.

Check the site for compatibility. All AM2+ boards are but you motherboard manufacture may not have released a bios update to officially support it yet.

Quick note for those interested. Just placed Phenom II 965 3.4GHz CPU on AM2+ GA-MA770-DS3 mobo using F7 BIOS, no modification. Immediate boot and stable. Mobo recognises correct model, but runs core O at 1600MHz and cores 1 to 3 at 800MHz which I assume is C&Q at work. Currently running AMD's OC software to determine max settings for CPU on this mobo. PC OS is Ms Vista Ultimate 64 which displays a lower WEI rating (4.8) performance in comparison to the X2 6000+ (5.4) CPU it replaced at current speed. All other components in pc are at prior WEI of (5.9).

PC is now at 3000MHz Stable. Using AMD OC multi-unlock 15 X 200 voltage slightly increased from 0.975 to 1.0 mainly because going straight to 3.4GHz resulted in system shutdown and I suspect voltage to be the culprit. Interestingly P2 @ 3.0 CPU WEI index score in Ms Vista 64 is (5.3) slightly less than X2 6000+ although in fairness that CPU runs closer to 3.1GHz. So either X2 core is according to Ms equally efficient as P2 core, unlikely, or more likely Ms Vista can't detect differences in the CPU architecture.

FYI:

Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) on Thuban/Zosma is just like Deneb/Heka i.e it 'talks' to both DDR2 and DDR3 hence making all/any AM2+ mobos with DDR2 DIMM slots good to go with a BIOS update ...like this el cheapo Gigabyte 760G hehe Just thought i'd post these in hardware forums i am a member of due to some confusion (Thuban/Zosma = DDR3 only)

Updated the bios on my spare box GA-M61P-S3 and dropped in a propus 635 Athlon II and it's running fine at 236 FSB (3.38 ghz) with vcore reduced to 1.275 so the stock HSF is just fine chillin @ 35c idle.

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 v1.x and dropped an Athlon II x4 in there about 2 weeks ago. It works. I updated the BIOS to the latest version (based on Gigabyte's CPU listing) but am not sure if this is a necessary step.

Thanks for this post, I cancelled my order before it left newegg. I'm glad I read this site. I'm new here, but I see so much info. Thanks Mark.
