so I have an interview coming up within the company, it is for another dept, and my boss wants me to take a 1/2 day personal time off for it. Is he right? I guess I will have to take the time off if I were to goto an interview at a different company, but this is within the company.

lol

yes, i think that is ok. if you were to go anywhere else, you would have to take time off...

edit: why dont you just do it during lunch? it cant take 4+ hours to do an interview.

He's right just because he's your boss. If he doesn't want to you let you out without taking the time off he doesn't have to.

Who approaced who about the job? If the company approaced you I would maybe say something. If your applying for another positions within th e co, your boss is being a d!ck, but what are you going to do?

edit for typo. the interview is from 9am to 2pm with 6 diff people, I guess a lunch in between too. I approached them for this opening. oh a few people from my dept applied too, and I am the only one got an interview so far, maybe they will do one internal person a week.

If it was your idea, then yeah, I guess you have to. If it was their idea then no way. I'd walk out before I took time off to do something they wanted me to do anyway. But your boss is a dick either way.

that is total BS

that company has no interest in career growth for its people

what a suck company

that blows

Oh yeah, there's also no way I'd take half a day off. WTF is that? Are you going to take the other half later or something? All or nothing.

Screw that. Take half of one now, then take the tail half of a Friday off or something. Early weekend pwns.

Oh yeah... issue at hand...

Just take it and be done with the issue. The only thing that sucks about it is that you are using one of your personal days so early in the year. How many do you get a year and what are the odds that you will NEED them for something later?

You guys are d!cks. You aren't doing work when you're at the interview so you shouldn't get paid. Duh. It's perfectly acceptable that he should want you to take personal time for it.

Doesn't sound like the company is really at fault, it's just his boss being a dick.

Many times these things are viewed as a benefit to the company. The company is promoting from within and most managers would probably overlook this time away from actual duties - it's really not that much time, just a few hours. His boss is being a tard about it.

If it's an internal job posting, it's debatable. Check with HR if so.

The thing is, by interviewing ANYWHERE, you are not being productive, so why should you be re-imbursed?

If anything he's saving his company a ton of money by taking an in house interview. If it's an in house bump the HR person doesn't have to waste time going through resumes and making appointments with out of house people. They don't have to waste their time playing phone tag with employment verification or references. His boss keeps him in house in case he is in need of consultation on a previous project. His (possibly) new boss knows he's loyal to the company. Not to mention a ton of wasted time in learning the companies philosophies, products, employees, Ect.

It's a completely win-win situation. Hiring within is almost always better. His boss is the dick. In the grand scheme of things the half day he is gone out of his position is easily remade up in spades BY THE COMPANY AS A WHOLE if interviews within.

It's a farkin' HALF DAY of personal leave, man. Quit being a little pansy about it and just go to the damn interview.

Who the hell cares about a half day in the big scheme of the rest of your life, geez.
