Is Metallica the greatest Metal band of all time?

If they had stopped after . . . And Justice For All, I don't think there'd be any question. Their track record up to that point was unassailable. It really depends how you define "metal," though.

I'll answer yes as long as I can qualify that I don't acknowledge the St. Anger album as actually existing, and that Load and Reload were pretty poor efforts overall (a couple fairly good songs, and a lot of crap).

I'm optimistic about their next album though as they finally ditched Bob Rock and brought in Rick Rubin to produce it. Rubin has done a lot of great work with bands that have "lost their focus" per se.

Most popular? Without a doubt.

Best? Hard to say. Considering the subjective nature of music, I refuse to believe there is any "Best Band".
