Is Listerine worth it?

I tried it out once at my friend's place and I remembered was 30 seconds of a burning/stinging sensation in my mouth.

Psychologically at least, my mouth felt cleaner because the pain must mean it's 'working'.

Anyhow, is it worth 1 minute (30 seconds in the morning and 30 seconds at night), plus the cost of resupplying?

Does anyone (who uses Listerine) think they got less cavities because of it?

Yes, it's well worth it. Esp if you have a significant other. Just make sure to also brush your teeth (pref twice a day) and floss if you can.

Using Listerine only won't work.

um, yea it does burn like hell, i figure it must do something, i dont know if its goin to cut down your cavity count and whatnot, but it makes my mouth feel alot cleaner and makes my breath all nice...its not all that expensive for how many times you use it...

i've actually heard bad things about it--- like it doesnt do a very good job of killing bacteria (same with all alcohol based mouth washes) there is a nother product out there-- hopefully somebody else knows the name of it that is supposed to be like a million times better than listerine.... i'll search around and let you know if i find anything.

Try the new Listerine strips that you put on your tongue. They come in a very small, thin container that you can carry in your pocket. They disolve on your tongue and do a pretty good job of freshening your breath.

Hell yeah it's worth it.. keeps the bad breath away all day if you can bear it (I can just barely bare the pain).. frankly it's kinda cool when you can embarass a girl when making out with her because your mouth is cleaner and breath is nicer than hers which is rare in my experience.. I'm not joking this actually happened to me.. it was so worth it 🙂

hehe, that's awesome. one time i was walking with about 4 other friends, male and female, and i popped a smint into my mouth. about 5 seconds later, they almost all simultaneously went "mmmmmm! what's that minty smell?" hehe....

Listerine tastes nasty, but I've never experienced a "burning/stinging" sensation. Maybe I've burnt out too many taste buds by eating lotsa spicy food. 😉

alcohol base mouthwash (listerine) isn't effective... and infact, might be worst because it dries it out. You want ones with chlorine dioxide

Which major non-hippie-tree-hugginging-alternative-berkinstock-wearing brands do you recommend?

Has anyone tried a chlorine-dioxide based mouthwash? I've actually heard of it before... never seen it anywhere before (except on-line). Does it work? I've been using Listerine for a couple years and frankly it doesn't do crap, but I use it because I have to use something. I've tried all the other "commercial" products, what really works?

You can use the "Mint" flavored Listerine... much easier to deal with than the original "flavor". Also make drinking water a priority for your day. Helps keep breath a bit fresher.

No need to buy name brand. Generic is fine and you'll get used to the 'burning' sensation. Nothing you can do will help better fighting plaq that using this twice a day. Nothing.

I heard that Listerine was first invented as a toilet bowl cleaner.

Edit: Just found out that's not true. It was used as an antiseptic for surgery.

Mouthwash?!? Heck, Listerine works great for removing grease from motorcycle chains. Excellent grease cutter. 😛

Seriously though, it provides an effective pre-caffiene jolt in the mornings. Don't know if this is true, but have heard Listerine is also good for the gums too.

<< I want to know more about chlorine dioxide experiences :S >>

Chlorine dioxide is an orange gas. cool eh?

More realistic alternative contains 5.25% sodium hypochlorite in aqueous solution. A gallon of this costs $1 at a supermarket in laundry department. Pure ClO2 is about 100x the strength of this

be aware that the pH of listerine is acidic & there are suggestions(not blind trial proven fact mind you) that prolonged use tends to hasten the loss of tooth enamel!
