My father, an attorney, explained to me that they're not actually judges anymore, just actors that used to be judges. What happens is as soon as they take their case to a real court, the judge will declare that Judge Judy will be handling the case and that her verdict will be offically accepted by the real judge as well, making it official.

Judge Judy was a judge in family court in NYC.. She was a MAJOR hard ass too (so it's not an act)... In fact, I don't want to get gross here, but she's the ugliest woman that I've ever found attractive.. not like sexually attractive, mind you, but like intellectually..
