all better actors than Depp... except Clooney, that guy sucks

really? Clooney's pretty damn good. Quite versatile. He also personally finances a lot of projects that wouldn't be made otherwise, b/c douchebags like Bay thrive in the current studio system. (Goodnight and Good Luck, for one).

I also prefer DiCaprio, Oldman, Defoe over Depp, as has been mentioned. All of 'em solid

okay, Clooney is a better actor too

I win an internet argument!!!!

++++e-peen for zinfamous!

Yeah, he was a cop, a detective, a correctional officer and an FBI agent. I picked one to cover them all. I probably should have said "law enforcement" or something like that.

Everything you previously listed sounds...well...different.

It isnt a Denzel situation where it is always the exact same character.

Wwwwhhhhooooossssshhhhh!!!

Ed Norton can be powerful but hasn't really seemed to be into acting as of late.. Phillip Seymour Hoffman's pretty amazing... Daniel Day Lewis.. Robert DeNiro/Pacino.. Ryan Gosling has been very good in a few movies... Speaking of Ryans, Ryan Reynolds seems to have a lot of potential but rarely is given a good script (he was great in "Nines")... Hmm.. Who else?

oh, the answer to your question:

Robert Downey Jr. is the best actor alive

ryan gosling is really good. i was surprised by him

I developed a bit of a man crush on him after 12 Monkeys.

I'll add an unpopular choice - Will Smith. He plays his over confident funny guy who'll save the world bit well, but he can also play cerebral characters very well.. I don't think he's the best actor alive, but he's as good as Depp, just lext eccentric

pursuit of happiness shows that he is capable of more than being a funny man.

most definitely. i did like seven pounds as well but i dont think many others did. and come on, i am legend was pretty good

There are lots of good to great actors out there :

Michael Caine
Philip Hoffman
Daniel Day Lewis
Tom Hanks
George Clooney
Leonardo DiCaprio
Edward Norton
Will Smith
Clint Eastwood
Tim Roth
Gary Oldman
Forrest Whittaker
Paul Newman (RIP, he is solid in EVERY thing he did IMHO)
Michael Douglas (he needs to grab some more roles, loved him in 'The Game' and 'Wonder Boys')
etc
etc
etc

oh you know who is also reallyyy good?
Don Cheadle!

PSH and Johnny Depp have the most range. Ed Norton is a fantastic actor but he hasnt taken a really challenging role in awhile.

Maybe not, but after American History X, his talent is obvious.

I would go one back and point to Primar Fear as evidence of his acting brilliance. But recently he's sat back and taken a lot of easy roles and put out a few clunkers. Depp is always changing up his choice for roles and he's good in all of them.

It was good in the sens that it's nothing new or in any way different from every other modern [insert zombie movie here].

The problem is that it completely bastardized the original story, and as such, the title actually has no meaning. The original, even 2 or 3 decades later, is still more clever and unique, b/c flicks like this are dumbed down for the least of audiences.

Watch "The Omega Man" for the original storyline.

probably because you just like monkeys

i will admit that he has been in some pretty incredible movies. he can also do some light comedy pretty well. and i cant deny his innate hotness

Johnny Depp is an incredibly talented actor. I don't know if he's the best of his generation, but I don't know that anyone else would get 30% of the votes in this poll. Perhaps you should add another poll with some of the other actors people have mentioned in this thread.

I like Pitt and Clooney very much in the Ocean's movies. I love that subtle humor.

Oh yeah, I love that guy, very understated but indisputably solid in everything I've seen him in.

To the Clooney detractors : his career is very mixed. He fares poorly in the roles where he's playing a smug, know-it-all kind of guy, and much better in more dynamic roles. He was brilliant in both Michael Clayton and Burn After Reading (though John Malkovich owned that film). His resume is very hit or miss, and of course, he was in that absolutely horrendous rendition of 'Solaris'. I haven't seen the Russian original, but have to imagine it was better than that steaming pile of poo. Even 'Batman and Robin' was better than that garbage, but it was crap too.

Hotel Rwanda was freaking amazing

i also agree with your take on clooney's career. i still need to see michael clayton. i have it but havent watched it yet!

No. He is amazingly versatile, and a very good actor, but he lacks stage presence. While he can steal scenes, he doesn't have the power of Al Pacino, Charleton Heston, Michael Caine, Brando et al. Put any of them on and you forget anyone else is there.

what the fuck is this shit about Depp being versatile?

Are we talking about another Johnny Depp besides the one who plays Jack Sparrow?

And the same character in Chocolate Factory, and the same character in Edward Scissor Hands, and teh same character in Demon Of Barber Street and the same................

The only fucking difference is the makeup

That doesn't make an actor talented or versatile

Finding Neverland
Blow
Sleep Hollow
Donnie Brasco

I thought those were all pretty different compared to the crazy characters he plays. Willie WOnka, Edward Scissor Hands and Sweeny Todd were all pretty different characters in terms of personality and demeaner. THe only consistency is the heavy makeup
