Phillip Seymour Hoffman has been around for quite some time, too.

He's excellent, but from what I recall he does mostly supporting roles. I really liked his character in the movie Charlie Wilson's War.

I think Johnny Depp has tons of talent.

I also think that over the same generation, a guy like Daniel Day Lewis pretty much destroys Depp (let alone anyone else) on screen.

I love PSH. He's one of the least appreciated actors around IMO. I didn't care much for Capote as a film, but for raw acting talent PSH was fan-freakin-tastic in that one. It's cool to see him in something silly like 'Along Came Polly' and then nail something serious like Capote. Just shows he can do damn near any role he wants.

I thought this was going to be a simple, respectable poll, but "You disagree and are an idiot" just throws your entire credibility out the window. Looks like the only guy who's a bigger douche bag than Johnny Depp is the OP.

His English wasn't clear, I interpret it that by disagreeing, you call Oilfieldtrash an idiot. 🙂

It's a compound sentence. Grammar, nubcake. "You disagree and (understood-you) are an idiot."

It makes perfect sense if you have any sort of grasp of the English language.

"Grammar, nubcake" is not a complete sentence.

Grammar, nubcake.

Holy crap, how could I have forgotten those two. 😱

You of all people should appreciate Johnny Depp in the movie Blow. Aren't you the one that gets coked out then goes into a CAP typing rage?

BFT

I also like Ed Norton, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, and I'll also be the only one to admit Tom Cruise. Christian Bale as well.

I can agree with most of that, but certainly not Cruise. Even before he turned batshit crazy w/ scientology I didn't care for his acting. Every fucking role has been the same for him... it's like he can't do anything else. It's the same cocky, back talking character that borders on 'bad boy' every time.

Tropic Thunder he was epic. Others, meh.

Johnny Depp is one of the few actors I can think of that doesn't seem to be playing himself in every movie. By that I mean he doesn't seem to have noticeable mannerisms that carry over from film to film. Unlike Christopher Walken or Al Pacino, for instance (this is not to say that they are bad actors).

Where did this cocaine accusation come from? Why can't you people find anything actually witty to say? Coke is one of the reasons that I was raised by a single parent. It's not funny. It destroys more lives than just the abuser.

Fits perfectly, though, that you're just another unoriginal worthless hairy-palmed pimple farming basement dwelling troll with no wit, recycling unfunny insults trying desperately to get under my skin to make you feel better about being so pathetic. Keep trying. Maybe some yer-mom jokes? Maybe some "I know you are but what am I" thrown in for good measure?

I don't think there is a single role of his I didn't enjoy. Magnolia, Almost Famous, Doubt, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Boogie Nights, Punch-drunk Love, I could go on, but seriously, the guy is awesome.

On the other hand, Depp relies too much on making up eccentric mannerisms for his characters in a lot of movies. By this measure Mel Blanc was the greatest actor in history.

Ed Norton can be powerful but hasn't really seemed to be into acting as of late.. Phillip Seymour Hoffman's pretty amazing... Daniel Day Lewis.. Robert DeNiro/Pacino.. Ryan Gosling has been very good in a few movies... Speaking of Ryans, Ryan Reynolds seems to have a lot of potential but rarely is given a good script (he was great in "Nines")... Hmm.. Who else?

oh, the answer to your question:

Robert Downey Jr. is the best actor alive

Depp's a pretty good actor, but far from being the "Greatest of our time."

IMO, Tom Hanks may qualify for that title. He's one of the best all-around actors in today's movie offerings, doesn't seem to be type cast in any way, leaves one character behind and becomes the next one seamlessly.

However, I also think there are many actors who are better than Depp...but he's still pretty dammed good. IMO, he does "Jack Sparrow" fairly well...although sometimes, it seems like he goes a bit...overboard...😛

It's hard to pick a greatest.
Johnny Depp, Ed Norton, and Leonardo DiCaprio are all very talented.

jean reno, clint eastwood, robert deniro, samuel l. jackson, al pacino, russell crowe, will smith, and daniel day lewis are just a few of the actors i like better than johnny depp.

I'll take Tom Hanks, Ed Norton and Russel Crowe over Depp, but I still like him, he's just not the best out there.
