PSH and Johnny Depp have the most range. Ed Norton is a fantastic actor but he hasnt taken a really challenging role in awhile.

He was saying "of my generation", presumably meaning 30's to early 40's. All but one of the actors you've listed are older than that. As is Tom Hanks who others have mentioned.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman has been around for quite some time, too.

He's excellent, but from what I recall he does mostly supporting roles. I really liked his character in the movie Charlie Wilson's War.

Yeah, he has many years, and many films of supporting roles, probably b/c he isn't that Hollywood handsome, typical leading role-type.

But he does have one Oscar for leading role, compared to Depp's 0. And another nomination (or two?)

I'll add an unpopular choice - Will Smith. He plays his over confident funny guy who'll save the world bit well, but he can also play cerebral characters very well.. I don't think he's the best actor alive, but he's as good as Depp, just lext eccentric

I also like Ed Norton, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, and I'll also be the only one to admit Tom Cruise. Christian Bale as well.

I can agree with most of that, but certainly not Cruise. Even before he turned batshit crazy w/ scientology I didn't care for his acting. Every fucking role has been the same for him... it's like he can't do anything else. It's the same cocky, back talking character that borders on 'bad boy' every time.

Tropic Thunder he was epic. Others, meh.

man, I couldn't stand Tropic Thunder. Thought it would be decent, but holy hell...after the praise it got, I really didn't see much funny.

and Tom Cruise? The only stretch he took in that role was the balding head and potbelly. Everything else was verbatim Tom Cruise in every other movie. Same delivery, same attitude.

blah.

pursuit of happiness shows that he is capable of more than being a funny man.

Maybe not, but after American History X, his talent is obvious.

Tom Cruise has done a couple decent roles, I thought his hitman in that Michael Mann film was pretty solid, though Jamie Foxx overshadowed him somewhat.

There are lots of good to great actors out there :

Michael Caine
Philip Hoffman
Daniel Day Lewis
Tom Hanks
George Clooney
Leonardo DiCaprio
Edward Norton
Will Smith
Clint Eastwood
Tim Roth
Gary Oldman
Forrest Whittaker
Paul Newman (RIP, he is solid in EVERY thing he did IMHO)
Michael Douglas (he needs to grab some more roles, loved him in 'The Game' and 'Wonder Boys')
etc
etc
etc

I thought this was going to be a simple, respectable poll, but "You disagree and are an idiot" just throws your entire credibility out the window. Looks like the only guy who's a bigger douche bag than Johnny Depp is the OP.

His English wasn't clear, I interpret it that by disagreeing, you call Oilfieldtrash an idiot. :)

It's a compound sentence. Grammar, nubcake. "You disagree and (understood-you) are an idiot."

It makes perfect sense if you have any sort of grasp of the English language.

Where the hell did that come from? You must have the cock and balls on the brain.

Make more stupid poll options please. Oh wait, you can't, you got Depp's blowup doll cock stuck to the back of your head.

I thought he was great in 25th Hour and The Illusionist.

I think Depp is a great actor, one of my favorites, but I can't think of a single very powerful performance that he's done.

All his roles are very believable characters, some stories better than others, some more entertaining than others, but nothing that's really moved me, so no way can I put him as the greatest of our time.

The problem with Tom Hanks is that he plays the same character in every movie. I mean, how many times can you play the mentally retarded-groom to be-astronaut-AIDS sufferer-airplane crash victim-detective-ad man-boy in a mans body-baseball manager-congressman-widower-record label executive-war veteran?

OP said of our time. I don't think CLint Eastwood or DeNiro are from our time unless you're in your 40's or 50's.

And no, Depp isn't the greatest actor of our time unless you're emo then you die over him.
