Well, that would be the layman's term, but "thinner" isn't technically correct. And as for those "old" studies (known as the French Paradox) which show that moderate alcohol consumption can be good for cardiovascular health, there are new studies coming out that dispute this. Just as "old" studies showed that butter was 'bad' for you, then new studies showed the hydrogenated vegetable oils in margarines were even worse.
I had once heard someone claim that intoxication was produced because alcohol thinned the blood, which is definitely false.
