Is it wrong to racial profile in this situation?

So at work I have to run a pizza buffet. We try to keep a pep, hawaiian, 2-toping, specialty, veggie on the buffet at all times...Well...it's very well known among the employees here that hispanics highly prefer to eat mainly plain pepperoni pizza off of the buffet...whereas the other races seem to prefer a variety. So whenever some hispanics come in (especially a large group) and order the buffet...I immediatley throw a couple pepperoni's in the oven to get them cooking. This always seems to work out just fine...as they get eaten.

If you're against racial profiling...then you are also against what I'm doing.

By definition I guess this isn't technically racial profiling...but it is the same thing only you're assuming that the targeted race is guilty of practicing something else instead of crime.

For the record, the reason I am asking this is because I've had people at work tell me I'm a racist for immediatley putting pepperoni pizzas in the oven as soon as I see a group of about 10 hispanics ordering the buffet.

The practice of constructing a set of characteristics or behaviors based on race and using that set of characteristics to decide whether an individual might be guilty of some crime and therefore worthy of investigation or arrest.

Are the hispanics committing a crime by only eating pepperoni pizza?

I would guess that they'd still get eaten even if it wasn't hispanics. Pepperoni is probably the most popular type of pizza. I can't think of anyone that I've met who liked pizza that didn't like pepperoni.

Well we generally put in an extra one when a group comes in and the one that's out there is running low...but if that group happens to be hispanic I'll put like 3 in.

Is what you are doing harming anyone? No
Is what you are doing helping provide better customer experience? Yes
Is what you are doing helping the business succeed? Yes

I see no problem with it. Some people just hate to face truth and hide behind the PC badge.

It's more like targetted marketing isn't it?

Racial profiling, targetted marketing, all these are just ways which we stereotype groups of people based on various factors like skin colour, level of wealth, etc.
But the truth is that stereotypes do not materialise from nothing. There must be a trend or reason for this to be so.

When people say asian kids generally do well in math, it is a stereotype. But the reason they think this to begin with, is probably because they have seen many asian kids do well in math.

Similarly, when people see a bunch of teenagers dressed in leather and metal in a dark alley, they feel afraid because such groups of "punks" have been known to rob/steal/whatever it is they do.

It's unfair to lump everyone together, but stereotypes allow us to make quick decisions without taking the effort to know everyone.

Back to OP, if you feel making the pizzas will get you more business, why not? Ultimately, you're a business, and making money is the top priority. As long as you do not discriminate AGAINST the hispanic community, I don't see what the big deal is.

I don't think it's wrong. I think it's an intelligent thing for a business to do, to particularly target its customers for their liking. If you have people who watch soap operas a lot, then put advertisements for soap opera merchandise during the commercials in the programs. Any intelligent business will do it. Good for you, keep on with the intelligent business :)

Uh.

Maybe they eat the pepperoni just cause thats what you make.

Do they truly avoid other types of pizza?

Next time, put just one pepperoni. See if they don't eat the others.

I bet they will.

I don't see it as racial profiling, but more of you being in tune with your customer's wants.

If I were running a buffet, I would eventually understand, that if I had lots of middle eastern customers, pork would not be very welcome to them on a buffet. If I understood that my customers would rather have lamb, chicken or beef, I would plan accordingly.

I don't see what the OP is doing, as being wrong, but as trying to provide a balance in customer service.

Ethnicity is not a bad thing. We all know certain groups prefer certain foods. That's not wrong, it's called "being of service". Apparently, so few grasp that concept these days.

Nope, what happens is that the pepperoni that is out there gets eaten within a minute and then they wait for another one...and that's gone in a couple minutes...then the 3rd is usually gone too...the other pizzas rarely get touched.
