Is it wrong to be excited about DC?

Hey guys,

Before i came to these forums i knew about distributed computing but thought that SETI was the only one. Then after coming here and being bombarded with a million various DC projects i didn't know what to do with myself. I've done DPAD and now SOB in my time here. What is odd is well...the feeling you get from the race!
I am more than excited that my 1.2ghz tbred system will soon be a 2.8ghz P4 (o/c to about 3.2+ hopefully!) but while i cannot wait for the increased general productivity a major role in my purchase was DC...how odd!

Throughout the time here i've felt the need to assimilate more more more (as engineer puts it). My friend's pcs run DC whenever they leave them on and remember to turn them on, 2 of my personal pcs run it (one is soon to be replaced w. the new system), and i've even flirted with putting it on people's pcs that i fix for free.
to note:
i fix a lot of pcs for people jsut for the heck of it, because i enjoy doing this. as payment i have almost asked them to run a DC client of their choice...so much untapped power...sadly i could never bring myself to such an *outlandish* offer...

just wondering if others have felt the same way...i fear a long life of *more more more* syndrome..lol

Nothing wrong with it at all - though I could be a little biased. ;)

Sometimes it's truly amazing.. you talk to members and find people still involved in projects just for the stats and competition aspect.. the original intent of the project being lost in the process. :Q Now, that's addiction; if you find that becoming the case, don't worry, you'll be in good company. :)

The goal behind the DC project should always be at the forefront...the stats just motivates you :)

I was very excited about it when I first started, but it seems like my enthusiasm comes and goes.

I did have 7 of my own computers running at one time though. Pretty good for a poor college student ;)

I think that Im one of the few ones that dont do this for competing. I do this for the stats and for the good cause :).

I'm addicted now too - DC projects really grow on you. For me, it's helping doing something even though I'm probably not going to become a doctor or an astronomer. We're at least doing something, albeit in a very limited way.

Also, now I look around and see computers and I wonder how people could leave them idle ;)

Limited funds combined with other expensive hobbies (photography) prevent me from having too many systems, but I still find the stats mildly addicting.

Same here. :)

I've been doing DC for a long time now, started with RC5 back in '99 I think.

I have had so much fun and I've learned so much about PCs, networking, operating systems, troubleshooting from the great team members here. :)

Not only that, I have found great friends, some of which I have met in RL, an online family that is supportive and very caring. :D

There have been a few times that I've felt like quitting, that it wasn't fun anymore. BUT I keep coming back, because I love this TeAm and what it stands for! :D

That's a *perfect* way of putting it! :D

Can't wait to hear how your new rig turns out. Since our systems will be very close in hardware we should do some benchmarks and compare once you're done. With so many options on that Abit IC7-MAX3 maybe one of us has a better BIOS setting that could help the other. Let me know if you're interested. :)

I can't seem to add PC's to my fleet fast enough. Whenever my employer empties out a cubicle I immediately set up Seti for the TeAm. I leave my work laptop crack 24/7, I have 3 PII 350's set up on a desktop that I hope to have crunching soon. I do all of this to help the electric company and the TeAm! My last power bill was $194!!!! 6 PC's here running full time.

It is addictive!
