My brother says to buy DDR533 for the new comp i'm getting, and i'm saying its a waste of money. However, he says if i don't get DDR533, Prescott will not work on my motherboard (Abit IC7-G). What do you guys think?

If you're overclocking a 2.4C or 2.6C, I'd go for it. Faster memory would let you keep a 1:1 ratio...

For a 2.4C and DDR533, you could run up to 3.2GHz at 1:1 and wouldn't be overclocking the memory yet. :)

And BTW, with yesterday's price drop, a 2.6C is supposed to cost the same as a 2.4C.

Overclocking as far as possible means you want memory to be as fast as possible too. Get the fastest memory that you can buy. Keeping a 1:1 ratio with the FSB:Memory speed is important. Synchronization = better performance.

Not really, with a P4 cpu speed is more important than mem speed.

If I were to chose between 250mhz @ 1:1 and 275mhz @ 5:4 I would chose the later.

DDR533 is a waste of $$. You will have to run lousy timings to get that speed. You can run a 5:4 ratio with better timings and get the same performance for less $$.

The difference in 5:4 and 1:1 is negligible.

What people sometimes forget around here, is that when these things are benchmarked, while one thing may be faster than another, it is rarely NOTICEABLY faster.

You would never NOTICE the diffrerence.

It's a waste of money in my opinion.

However I'm a price/performance person, so I use a barton 2500+ @ 3200+

If I had alot of cash I would go intel, but im poor so I dont. If I were spending on an intel setup I would go top of the line

I am however an all or nothing kind of person.

If you OC, the easiest/fastest combo is DDR533. You should check up on how much extra you will pay for DDR533 so you can OC, and how much a 2.8C or something will cost. Depending on the memory, it may be cheaper to get a 2.8C or 3.0C and DDR400 memory.
