When you have no intention of useing the supplied HSF is it worth $5 more for the warrenty? I'm planning on getting a 2500+ from newegg if it makes any difference.

Edit: How about $10 the price difference between the 2600+s ;)

Is a 3 year warranty worth $5 to you?

Edit: or does removing the hsf invalidate the warranty?

Sell the HSF for for $3, and the 2 year longer warranty costs ya a buck a year.

Remember, after overclocking the warranty is void though.

Yep, as soon as you OC, there's a permanent etching that appears on the CPU for everybody thereafter that handles the CPU to recognize it as a CPU that has been OCed before.

The last retail Athlon XP that I bought had didn't have the HS attached.

No, it doesn't appear on the CPU... it's etched into your concience.

Where do you get this from? Or are you being sarcastic?

Theres no way they can tell if you've overclocked unless you fry your chip, as there are burn marks. Its damn near impossible to fry a P4 and there are tempurature protections on all modern motherboards so the chance of frying a AMD chip are slim also.

I'm not the least bit familiar with the latest CPU prices, least of all AMD, but couldn't you bump up to the next higher CPU speed for the price of the 1337 fan?

Then you're not looking close enough. The etchings are there.

just remember to keep the fan, the sticker has the serial you need for any warranty repairs (at least the old ones did)

get retail. you get a free heatsink, even if you won't use it, but you also get that 3 year warrenty. unless you totally fry it or don't clean up your super-duper thermal paste, they won't know you've overclocked it. not the "moral" thing to do, but it works.
