Alcohol withdrawl symptoms can kill a person... I'd say that's pretty tough.

well, i always have tended to be a little short on sleep. i dont really get out much or am very social, i dont have many other hobbies, and i tend to sit around and not get enough exercise.

currently also i dont have a job, and ive been prolonging finding one, because i have the internet to entertain me all day, and im living at home and not paying rent.

okay, but internet addiction is still a real thing. if it wasnt we wouldnt have so many counselors for it and such.
i dont see how it would be any different than something like gambling addiction.

and i also think internet addiction could have some chemical basis. Endorphins may increase via using it, therefore I'm trying to seek that state constantly.

People without the internet arent really people. Just shells. Seriously. The internet is a new media that is integrating more and more to society as a whole. You arent a person if you dont have internet access.

Desktop support pay is just fine unless you have some extraordinairy spending habbits and being in Desktop support, there are plenty of opportunities to advance whether you are taking the booksmarts route or the salesman route. I have seen dozens of COMPLETE IDIOTS rise up through the ranks without having a clue about what they are doing.

Yes, you need the internet to be a person, no you dont need the internet to work in IT, but it would make more sense.

Does anyone else agree with this guy? Thats like saying that someone isnt a person if they dont own a TV. I know the internet is common and almost expected in American homes, but seriously, its not like the internet is replacing face to face communication or phone communication or anything like that.

self control is easier to practice in some circumstances than others!

The internet is the defining invention of our time. Good luck if you want to forcibly remove it from your world.

While you do that, im going to stop using fire, and wheels. Im addicted to those bastards and I think they are making my life worse by allowing people to smoke around me and by making me have to drive to work instead of walking.

Have fun making large batches of french fries. Or doing Lawn/Yard work. Or working in construction. Or.....

Do you have a degree, and if so what is it in?

the thing is, someone can get by without using the internet in their home. in a cold climate, you cant really live without a fire.
and wheels, well that example was just stupid :)

i would agree though that the internet is the invention of our time.

Or you can just learn better self-control.

you know, i tend not to wish these types of horrible problems on people (addictions and stuff) maybe it would do you some good to deal with something like this the same intensity that i have, before you go around passing judgement on people.

Sounds to me like you're just lazy. Get off your ass and get to work.

whether i was working or not made no difference on how addicted i was to the internet.
so please dont try to skirt the issue here.

That's the issue. You aren't addicted to the Internet. You are addicted to doing nothing and being lazy.

Don't try and blame the issue on the internet, blame it on your lack of self control, don't even say that you "can't" do it either because that's not very smart or accurate.

Limiting yourself to your current level is pointless... if you want your work to be strictly work and not related to a hobby or something, then that's fine, but if computers/internet are a pass time, then look for a different field to work in.

so the internet is/was just an excuse for me to do nothing and be lazy, even when I was employed?

you folks dont understand. before the internet came out. I didnt have any self control problems!!!
All I want to do, is get back to that state. I feel like this thread is becoming less about my job and more about my addiction. and that is NOT what I was intending.

can you explain the 2nd part a little better? Are you trying to say that its wiser in general to not have the same career as your hobby?

Okay folks, I'm willing to admit that possibly you all are right, and that maybe it is just a matter of me exerting a little more self control.

But consider this. Exerting self control is NEVER EASY for anyone! It takes a lot of willpower. And consider this: maybe its easier for me to not have to worry about exerting as much self control in the first place. You gotta admit, if the internet wasnt in my house, itd be much less of a temptation for me!

so... instead of just telling me to saddle up and grab some self control, maybe consider that i might actually prefer not having the internet in my home.

You aren't going to be really doing IT without internet at home. You may be able to get a Geek squad type job though at a corporation...could pay well for the skillset needed.
