Is it too much to ask for a politician to not lie?

Theres quite a few threads about politicians lying. Because this is a left leaning board theyre mostly GOP, but Democrats arent immune either. Lets take Joe for example:

He's told quite a few doozies. Aside from his lies, his behavior make him ineligable for POTUS again,, but who's left? Im not aware of anyone left or right who hasnt been embroiled in some story of being caught in major lies or scandal. And of course Trump lied continuously. Theyre both serial liars.

Is it too much to expect for a candidate to just be honest?

Of course he’s not ineligible, that’s nonsense.

Regardless, yes he tells lies. All politicians lie and we don’t want to live in a world where they always tell the truth. As @Captante notes the most important questions are when and why.

And of course Trump lied continuously. Theyre both serial liars.

Bad attempt at #bothsides. Biden has lied for self-aggrandizement at times and that’s bad and he deserves criticism for it. He is not even on the same planet as Trump in terms of quantity and more importantly, severity of his lies.

OK. Yeah but...
Right. I think it is both expected and desirable for politicians to lie sometimes. There are plenty of times that it is not though, and it’s good to criticize those.

I think your point would be much stronger if you didn’t try to equate Joe Biden, a pretty regular politician in the lies department, with Trump, who I think is undoubtedly the most mendacious public figure in the history of the country. If you see no difference there then I see no need to draw a distinction between Biden and regular citizens as of course everyone lies sometimes.

Well, brace yourselves for I speaketh the truth.

Almost half of the voting population is women. Women want to hear lies. They want to feel safe and protected.

Solution: Anyone, even a toddler, should be allowed to vote. That will bring balance to the fiasco we call democracy.

How would a child vote, I hear you ask?

Show the baby two photos and guess from its behavior which one it is attracted to.

Example:

Show baby Trump. Baby goes waaawaaa.

Show baby Barney the Dinosaur. Baby giggles.

Barney is now President.

Long live America!

I mean this is where the lunacy comes from. It's hard to take someone seriously where they can both sides Joe Biden and Donald Trump. I mean it's not even in the same galaxy. It just shows a willful ignorance to continue to demean the level of discourse by starting out with absurdities. How can you have a conversation when people base their thinking on nonsensical comparisons

There's lies and there's gaffes. Joe is a walking gaffe machine. It's not a question of which is worse. It's intent. Wake me up when Biden loses in 2024 and tries to overthrow the results with nothing but pure unadulterated lies and a squad of morons that follow him.

It sounds like most of you are fine with Biden's lies, because they arent as bad as Trump's? Is that right? Thats yes or no.
What’s weird is I think most people aren’t ok with them, at least not all of them. You made a big mistake trying to #bothsides here though.

A king had a scaffold erected in the city square and notices posted at the city gates that any caught lying entering the city for purposed other than stated would be hanged. When Mulla Nasrudin entered the city he was asked where he was going. "To be hanged in the city center" he replied. You're lying the guards proclaimed. "So hang me in the city center if I am."

Anybody who says he is a liberal and is an authoritarian lives a lie they are unaware they commit. So it is with many other lies.

If the wise didn't lie they would be killed by those who do.

Truth tellers are despised.

I mean, doesn't everyone lie?

Sometimes you lie to preserve people's feelings, sometimes to preserve your own, sometimes you just omit something that you know is gonna blow shit up.

No one is truthful 100% of the time and when its a high-stakes high-visibility game like politics I don't think why people would expect *less* lying.

We HAVE to lie. How can we NOT? We have limited waking hours. With each passing hour, we grow ever more tired.

You come home from work at the end of the day and your little bundle of joy asks you, "Daddy, can I have a puppy?"

You smile wearily, "Yes dear. Time for bed!"

In bed, your wife asks after the romp if she can have that necklace she's been eyeing for a month.

You smile wearily, "Yes dear. Time for bed!"

In the morning, both girls remind you of their wants.

You smile and say, "Did I say that? Oh, I must have been too tired to think. We'll talk about it in the evening"

And you know you told them all lies. Every single one of them. So don't you dare be the righteous one!

How you can expect honesty from others when you can't even be honest with yourself?

This topic is sort of a carry-over from another thread.... I don't think OP even replied here only reacted.
