Ocarina of Time is awesome. :D If you like Zelda, be sure to get A Link Between Worlds. It's a great game done in the style of the old isometric Zelda games but using a full 3D engine.

I saw that one there, but went with Ocarina first. It will be the next one though. But....I wish they would release a 3D version of A Link To The Past from the Super Nintendo. :)

By the way, anyone know how good or whatever the Castlevania game is in 3D ? Mirror Of Fate or something to that effect.

Well, you're going to love Link Between Worlds. It's a direct sequel to LttP. Pretty much the same overworld, but with different dungeons and bosses.

Why?

What is really the difference?

There's a handful of different catchable Pokemon between the two versions. In particular, you catch Xerneas, the blue stag-like, Fairy type Pokemon in X as the legendary, and Yveltal, the red hawk-like, Flying/Dark type Pokemon in Y. Mewtwo and Charizard have different mega evolutions depending on the version.

...and that's it, really. I went with X because I preferred Xerneas over Yveltal, simple as that.

Why is everyone saying "Get the Zelda 3DS"? Obviously it's a heck of a deal for those that got it, but I thought it was a limited edition that once sold out, never got a restock. I haven't seen one for months anywhere.

It's just cool to have. However it was only a limited release, and it's probably out of production by now. If you wanted it you would have to get it used. Not worth it at this point unless you are a hardcore Zelda fan.

I'm considering getting a 3DS this week. How much of a pain is it to get started with the rebate card at target?

Ooh! I can answer this because I've actually worked at Target the past couple years. It's not a rebate card, you can get it either as a credit card or as a debit card linked directly to your checking account. Whenever you use your card to purchase something at Target, you get an automatic 5% discount. The credit card has no interest as long as you keep up with the monthly payments, and neither the debit card or credit card have hidden fees (I can directly attest to that from using the debit card for years). They can open a card up for you right at the register, you'll need valid ID for the credit card and valid ID and a blank check which they return to you void for the debit card (so they can link it to your routing number). They print out a paper temporary card which you can start using immediately. The actual card gets mailed to you in a standard 7-10 business days.

I hope that was detailed enough for you. :D

Alright cool. I got the 2DS bundle with Pokemon X in Target a couple of days ago.

What RPG games do you guys recommend. Or just what games do you recommend in general that are worth the price.

Bravely Default is a solid JRPG.

I'm playing Bravely Default now and I love it...but are you ok with grinding a bit for levels? You have to level the jobs you want to use with each character separately. Then you can level jobs with each character to use extra support abilities or like a subjob with all the spells and abilities you have unlocked. So it's a lot of grinding to level the jobs you want and experimenting with the options.

For example I have a ninja which I am leveling but first I leveled up spell fencer in order to use the elemental enchantments for my weapons to exploit enemy weaknesses. Then I leveled ranger to get the accuracy and damage bonuses. So I had to level spell fencer to the proper level, level ranger to the proper level, then switch to ninja and level it but I can use every ability spell fencer has up to whatever level I leveled to and add the two support abilities from ranger that I wanted. So if you level a black mage to level 14 (max level for jobs) then switch to white mage, you can use all the black mage spells on that job too if you wanted. You can level multiple jobs and pick various support abilities to add to your main job. So a knight can have abilities from monk, swordmaster, and dark knight if you wanted. Each support ability takes up a certain number of slots, which is limited. You start off with one slot and eventually get up to 5.

Anyway my point is this. When you fight enemies you get experience points and job points. Experience points increase your level and stats (str, int, mnd etc). Job points increase your job level and at each level you get certain abilities and bonuses unique to that job. Job points don't come as quickly as experience so when you are building your character the way you want you need to grind a bit to level the jobs.

The good thing is when you do New Game+ you keep all your levels and gear.

Other games worth a look are Legend of Zelda Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem Awakening(tactical RPG), Shin Megami Tensei IV(RPG), Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Mario and Luigi: Dream Team(rpg), Kingdom Hearts, You may like Super Mario 3D Land, I like Animal Crossing New Leaf, Retro City Rampage DX, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan(RPG). Some of these show off the 3D effect quite well which cannot be shown on the 2DS obviously but the games are still good.

I'm about 4hrs in and have spent that mostly grinding. Yet coming off my Disgaea run, it's not that bad. Disgaea has an absolutely horrendous levelling system. You can have a four character combo attack that annihilates an enemy, but only the one that actually nails the final blow gets EXP. It's stingy on experience points too, so it takes ages to level anybody up. Plus all newly created characters all start at level 1. Argh, it truly is hell.

I'm about Level 13 right now for Tiz & Agnes about to do the boss battle with Ominus. So yeah, still in the intro.

Too complicated for my tastes.

It's really not...you have 1 main job, one job where you can access all the skills or spells, and support abilities (5 slots max).

Pick a main, choose what job compliments your play style best, then add on abilities that augment your skills and stats.

Yeah, I'm level 56 with all 4 characters, and have all the jobs unlocked up to ninja and swordmaster. I have a maxed white mage(support with performer lv7), maxed black mage(support with white mage lv5 for now), maxed ranger(needed max level to get the support ability hawkeye and precision), lv9 ninja(support lv7 spell fencer), lv11 swordmaster(support lv12 monk).

I'm just about to start chapter 4 now so I spent a great deal of time grinding levels out for jobs. Also, I have a max level armor shop and weapon shop in my rebuilt Norende village. I have no idea how many hours actual game play but rebuilding the village works when your 3DS is in sleep mode which is good.

Anyhow I can safely recommend this game, even knowing that later chapters have lots of repetition.

Heard that Bravely Default is pretty good.

How does it compared to games like FInal fantasy 6?

It's very similar to the old Squaresoft RPGs from the SNES and early PS1 days with the overworld, random battles etc. You can adjust the difficulty and the random battle rate on the fly so if you're just passing through an area you can turn the random battles off. If you want to grind you can turn it to +100% and get attacked every couple of steps. The battle system is unique in that you use battle points (BP) to make a move. You can default to save a turn and go into defense mode and the next turn you have 2 BP to use. You can also use brave mode which lets you stack 4 turns at once. You can even go to negative BP but you cannot attack again until you are at 0. So there's a risk/reward system tied to battles. Some jobs get powerful bonuses when you store BP and then allow you to unleash devastating attacks right in a row.

This reminds me, I want Brave Fencer Musashi on 3DS. I don't think Bravely default is for me, I don't usually do grinding too well nor turn based combat. But I am looking for something more akin to zelda.

Ah thanks man!

I still can't decide to get whether BD or FE:A. How is the storyline for Bravely Default?

BD has a demo. Give it a try, they give you a couple of the unlockable jobs to try out too.

The story...it's not bad but it's typical save the world stuff. The crystals are taken over by darkness and all the vestals (basically priestesses) are gone save one. You have to awaken the crystals while dealing with political turmoil at every city and port on your way. As you progress the back story for the 4 main characters opens up a bit and you learn a bit more about some of their history. There are two endings. Not a good and bad ending. Just the ending and the true ending. There's basically a point of no return that isn't spelled out for you. If you go this way you get the true ending. If you miss it you get the other. It will save at that point and you can reload if you want to do the other.

Oh and about saves, the game defaults to autosave which means it saves your game before you enter a dungeon or when you leave. So you don't have to worry so much about deaths. Before each boss battle is a point you can save at manually as well. Makes it very easy to pick up and play for newcomers. You can turn autosave off.

Not that much of a pain. Last year my wife applied during checkout at Target B&M. I would recommend going to your local Target that has a 3DS in stock, bring your government issued picture ID (drivers license or passport), assuming your credit is decent you should be approved in about 3 minutes. I would personally go for the credit card instead of debit card.

5% discounts at check out are instant, no waiting, no rebate checks, it's awesome. Free shipping for online purchases and I think the return period is extended to 45 days for Red cardholders.

Even though it's a turn-based strategy RPG, I will recommend Finals Fantasy to anyone who gets a Nintendo console. The two on the GBA were great, and the GameCube one was pretty solid as well (though I rented it and didn't get to play a lot of it).

I absolutely recommend Fire Emblem: Awakening to any RPG fan who owns a 3DS. Huge cast of endearing, funny, and sympathetic characters that interact a lot, great battle mechanics, fantastic art direction, and memorable music. The story is pretty linear -- you go from one story battle to the next, with cutscenes playing in between. However, there's plenty of side battles to play along the way. It's not a hugely original setup -- amnesiac protagonist joins an respected fighting force to defend a kingdom -- but there are plenty of plot twists. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is an eShop demo with the first couple missions that you can try out. Keep in mind though that the demo cuts off before the full party management and interaction features unlock in the actual game.

I haven't actually played Bravely Default, just the barebones eShop demo, so I can't give a true opinion on it. It looks fun though, and I plan to pick it up when I get the extra money.
