Is it too late to buy a 2DS?

Was planning to get a 2DS... I don't want to get a console and then a newer gen is going to come out soon.

No. the 3DS/2DS is only three years old. It's really just starting to mature as a system.

I'd personally buy a 3DS XL over the 2DS. Even though it's more money, it's more compact to carry around and the clamshell protects the screens. Plus you get the full 3D effect. Used ones aren't too bad on eBay right now.

I agree with mmntech. 3DS XL is the way to go.

Don't worry about the system's life. The 3DS/2DS still have a lot left.

3DS XL Zelda Edition is the way to go. Got one myself, epic game and the 3D looks pretty darn good really. I'm not too happy with the 2014 game lineup and am kinda bored with what I have and what's available atm but it's a great system. I just wish they would make an internet radio app for it like TuneIN or something. It lacks apps that's for sure.

2DS was not top of the line when it came out.
Having said that, I just saw a ton of them at Walmart dirt cheap. They are trying to dump the things.

If you want apps, you could always just go buy a Shield. :D
Nvidia is actually selling them for $200 now, which isn't too bad. Though the requirement of a GeForce GTX 650 or higher for streaming kinda kills its usefulness for me. CUDA needs to die in a fire.

Oh, and the OP will definitely want the Zelda Bundle. Link Between Worlds is a wonderful game.

What is the purpose of the 2DS besides a lower price? The fixed screen angel would not be ideal and you would need some type of case to protect it.

Kids. No 3D to make their eyes go wonky, hinge for them to snap off, and $99 price on sale is easy to swallow.

Not at all. The DS ran from 2004 to 2011, 7 years. The 3DS is just 3 years in, and it's going strong. It's still got a good 3 years left in it as a gaming platform. I'll echo mmntech's recommendation to get a 3DS XL. It's really a better experience, and one of the key things that makes the 3DS unique and worthwhile IMO is the 3D. And it's always cool to get a limited edition 3DS like the Legend of Zelda Link Between Worlds one.

Like Dumac said, it's really meant to appeal to younger kids, make it more affordable for their parents, and make it safer for them to use by removing the 3D. Any adults buying the 2DS because it's cheap are just bonus to Nintendo; IMO any adult should get the 3DS XL or at least the original 3DS.

Makes sense. Don't have a kid old enough to own a gaming system so I just haven't had to consider that.

I'm skeptical of the support they will get and haven't looked into it much but pretty hard to beat mario and zelda. Streaming sounds kinda like a waste of resources to me...so you leave your computer on, to play it on a tiny screen? I dunno I think if I'm going to play those types of games inside my house, I'll play it on the big screen with proper peripherals. Same with Vita's streaming but I guess some people want that? Maybe I just don't understand the usefulness of streaming.

You can get refurbs from Nintendo for not too bad of price, although you might want to wait for one of the sales instead. Wasn't the 3DS XL like $160 new at Amazon and places every so often? I think those might've even been bundled with games. The XL seems to be worth it, its a more polished system, although its a shame Nintendo didn't take the opportunity to slap on a second analog "stick".

For the most part yeah its a bit of a waste, but if you have a family and have to share a TV then it has some usefulness, or if you're someone that likes to game while lying down or maybe outside or something. I don't know, since it wouldn't be feasible to play them far away with the state of mobile internet (despite Sony's commercial that shows some guy walking all over the place and doing remote play...). Although with how cheap displays are it'd be cheaper to just get an extra one.

But then apparently some people like to be able to keep playing while they take a dump (seriously, I think I remember people testing how far their wireless controllers would work so that they could keep playing on the toilet).

Shield I think was more proof of concept, and nVidia is pushing cloud gaming hard so they had to come up with some extra reason that it makes sense or something. But mobile gaming is a bit of a chicken and egg thing. We've been waiting forever for serious games, but the developers have been waiting for any sign that people are willing to pony up for them. With the talk of UE4 and CryEngine and everything working on mobile maybe we'll see more than the usual. I'm not holding my breath though, as I'm guessing it'll just be the same microtransaction hell just with better graphics.

I decided to pick up a regular size 3DS today, grabbed The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time 3D to go with it.

Awesome game.

Ocarina of Time is awesome. :D If you like Zelda, be sure to get A Link Between Worlds. It's a great game done in the style of the old isometric Zelda games but using a full 3D engine.

I had Ocarina on N64. I never could get into it back then and less so now. Zelda 3 style is the only one I can seem to get into and LBW's is pretty badass but a bit cheesy too in a way that Zelda 3 was not.
I would love to see more Snes and N64 games ported to 3DS. I've been wanting StarFox 64 but they want too much money for what it is.

Why is everyone saying "Get the Zelda 3DS"? Obviously it's a heck of a deal for those that got it, but I thought it was a limited edition that once sold out, never got a restock. I haven't seen one for months anywhere.

Agreed. $40 is WAY too much to ask for a nearly 20 year old game with no new content. Sad thing is I once saw it on clearance for $15 at Sears once but didn't bother because I didn't have a 3DS. Now I wish I picked it up because I love star fox. :(

Beat me to it plus save an extra 5% if you have their RED debit/credit card.

I'm considering getting a 3DS this week. How much of a pain is it to get started with the rebate card at target?

When I use to manage Target they could approve you for their card on the spot within minutes and the discount was applied immediately. It was real painless and they'd spam each person in line as they were ringing up. However when I was the manager the discount was also 10% and not 5%.

I picked up the 2DS Bundle today with Pokémon X and I will say that the 2DS is more comfortable to hold than the regular 3DS over extended periods of time. The normal 3DS feels cramped to me. I only got to play the 3DS XL for short periods of time at the kiosks at stores so I can't really comment on that one.

I will say that Pokémon X is damn addicting.
