Is it still crazy to scan 1000 magazines?

you should contact the publisher and tell them you have a digital backup of their magazine from the last 100 years.

Actually that's a good idea. You might make a tidy profit.

I am pretty sure they have their own backups. They would not want mine.

Do you seriously want to download a pdf of over SIX HUNDRED AQUARIUM magazines?

My brother-in-law has a whole aquarium room in his basement. 3 walls lined with aquariums with a row down the middle. He breeds them, raises them etc. Used to have his own business supplying companies with fish products and doing their tank cleanings and things like that.

I thought it'd be fun to give him a huge thing like this... Not like I care if I waste some bandwidth...

Stupid quote time, but I can't resist.

So how exactly does your brother-in-law breed and raise aquariums?

😛

I have collected over 15 years of Aquarium magazines but they are taking a lot of room up in my den. I don't have the heart to just throw them away (I will probably give them to a local library) but I am still in the hobby and I still enjoy reading them and using them as a resource.

Do you think it's crazy to scan 600+ mags? I won't be scanning every page but all pages with articles on them so for example a 70 page mag will have 45-50 pages that have articles or pictures on them.

I guess I will find out how tough my Canon Scanner is 🙂

To update:

633/637 (99.37%) Done 🙂

4 mags to go

52000+ scans

21gb of scans

314 lbs (144kg)weight

No Torrents 😛

Cheers,
Aquaman 😀

You should have posted your progress after each page.... 😉

Well, he said he started out with 3 but since he left them alone in the dark room, now he has aquariums everywhere. He's even started giving them away. 😉

i find it to be quite annoying that you wont torrent the scans. are you proud of this for some reason? i would understand if it took special skills or a rare talent, but anyone with a scanner could have done this, and much much faster with even a decent one at that. hoarding crap for yourself is pretty lame, and now are too proud to share the wealth. i wish i had a ton of magazines to scan that people wanted to see, because i would share it with anyone who wanted it.

i dont even want to see your scans, at all, but there are people here who could probably learn a lot and cherrish your collection. now that it is easily distributable, it is petty not to do it.

lastly, why the hell do you care if someone steals a picture of your fish tanks? LMAO wtf is that?! omg someone might see a picture of an aquarium and they may not know it was mine! but they wouldnt even know who i was anyway if i personally sent it to them via email because they are a total stranger! the horror1!!1111!!1!11

Well........ if you wanted to do something like that and share it with others........ fine. I choose not to.

Why should I share my collection with everyone and their brother? I paid for them and I don't think it's fair for the publishers to lose out on sales of back issues that they have for sale.

I choose not to post pictures because of miss use of photos on other aquarium forums. Not my personal photos (since I don't post any) but I've seen far too many people steal others photos and claim credit for them (on their own websites or articles they write).

You should contact the publishing company. If they haven't done this, perhaps they'd pay you for your work?

Wouldn't they have the ORIGINAL files?

No, no, I understand what you're doing, I'm saying I doubt the publisher would pay you for your work.
