Is it possible to discuss something about science without being interrupted with religious crap?

I have my religious beliefs.
But for the most part, any religious discussion on here is moot, at best. Although entertaining.

Scientific discussion, on the other hand, is very enlightening to some of us, and stimulates the mind.

But it never fails that somebody has to interfere with these discussions by throwing in the 3-letter "G" concept to bungle things up.

If you have strong religious beliefs, good for you, show some respect to those who want to carry on a different topic of discussion. You can start a my-god-is-better-than-your-god thread anytime you want. And likewise, the anti-god types should keep their snobbish insults out of those threads as well.

Of course this will never really happen, though, will it.
But maybe we can try harder to show people to the thread door when it does happen, rather than enagage them in their quest.

How about a My-Paradigm-Model-of-the-Universe-is-better-than-your-Paradigm-Model-of-the-Universe type thread?

But seriously SirFshAlot there are actually some pretty decent science based forums out there for good scientific discussion, for instance Space-Talk if you are into spatial studies at all, and their are others I have seen but not bookmarked (I am mostly into astronomy and space study, I would love to build my own radio telescope and small observatory) dealing with all manners of science.

Check em out for some good discussion. :)

Does "God Dammit" count? ;)

Actually, SF, I haven't seen what you're talking about - but I usually don't get into too many scientific discussions at ATOT. Most of the time I'm either blown away by people with far more background on the subject, or swept away by bullshit...normally the latter.

I am not sure about Saturn but I believe here in this hemisphere it is in the spring equinox.

However to see Uranus you may have to bend over further than you probably should. ;)

Rio,
I haven't seen what you're talking about

just do a search for any of our favorite on-call resident pastors, and look at the threads that have words like "big bang", "universe", "evolution", etc.

SirFshAlot - what of those of us who believe in both God AND evolution/big bang theory?

SirFshAlot:

Yes. I can behave :). The only word I will say in my defense is that I have never initated a God-thread, been the first to bring God up in an existing thread, or mocked and flamed those who had a different perspective.

Anyone care to discus a "holographic" universe model?

Or theories about an implicate order?

I'd be surprised if either of the last two (Optimus and Athanasius) are doing any 'Jesus Spamming'. We do have a few on here, though - but IMO they are far outnumbered by the Atheist Missionaries who remind us every other day that they think theists are deluded. ;)

Optimus,
what of those of us who believe in both God AND evolution/big bang theory?

I'm one of those, and like I said in my initial post here, I consider the religious discussions to be moot. My belief is something that isn't arguable.
And, it's better, regardless, to not talk apples and oranges at the same time. Unless that is the topic presented(which sounds like a good one to me).

Ditto.

Yeah, I don't go for 'Jesus Spamming' as Rio so aptly named it :)

Actually, I'm just as irritated by it as the rest of you.

I think the religous order (don't get me wrong I do believe in God and have faith in him) are worried science will disprove God, but I like to think every new step we make scientifically only proves God has been here and done his will. Sorry for crapping the thread SF but I just wanted to let you know that you can believe in science but put your faith in God.

I'm a firm believer that there is a God, he has a giant computer with a "smite" button, and he set something on the key 20 years ago while my name was selected and just hasn't gotten back to it yet.

SirFshAlot - agreed here... so what are we going to discuss then?

We have an answer - 42. But what is the question?

;)

No its not. The reason is science can never debunk the idea that God exist. And because we live in a society that is raised to believe in God, our thinking will always refer back to our belief in God as a basis to judge everything in life, including things of science.

Athanasius,

The only word I will say in my defense is that I have never initated a God-thread, been the first to bring God up in an existing thread, or mocked and flamed those who had a different perspective.

but you are more than willing to engage religious banter in great detail in non-religious threads

I think the way to curb the spammers is by ignoring.

And, why not start a "God-thread"? Who says that is wrong? Silly, and inane, maybe.:)

did you guys ever see that show on the discovery channel,"95 moons and counting"?
great show, they showed a moon from a planet that i forget, that was made of pure raw fuel and could support the fuel needs of earth for some rediculous number of years, maybe 40 million? they said they want to exploer the moon with a type of remote controled submarine but if there were to be just one little itsy bitsy spark the entire moon woul just dissentigrate in a matter of minutes. i love the discovery channel some times

it's not crapping at all
this isn't one of the 'scientific threads'
it's all appropriate in this topic
