Is it normal to prefer to stay at home over a social event?

OP, I think that it would probably be better for you (and your career) if you were to go to the event. Why? Because of all the possible networking. In this economy, its now not what you have for a degree or work experience, its who you know. Your manager is right.

some people are just homebodies who don't like crowds. I am like that about 70% of the time. I like meeting new people, but I despise going to parties.

You are probably an introvert. This means, simply, that it taxes your reserves to be around others. Extroverts, by contrast, recharge by being around others. You are made a certain way, just accept it and if others don't, fvck em.

j/k

but you could have it

I'm an introvert so I tend to stay home even if I get invited to go somewhere. I like going out with people I feel comfortable with or share the same interests.

Hi all,

To cut a long story short, we've got this social even at work, well it's just finished this afternoon actually. It's a lunch at a horse racing event.

I've told my gf that I'd much rather be at home in front of the computer reading Anandtech!!! She just laughed and tell me that's not what most people would prefer. Well, I do admit to that but I just felt that there must be a lot more people out there who have similar feelings towards these events?

It's nothing more than a social gathering of a few staff members (turn out rate is around 50% for our local state office), an excuse to get drunk and socialise about pointless topics.

What do you guys think?

Well socializing at company functions is a great way to advance your career and its generally frowned upon if you don't attend.

So yes, you're weird and we have medication for people like you.

😉

It's also a good way to get fired. There was almost a "man overboard" incident in the potomac a couple of years ago at a company party... 😀

You do realize that instead of speaking with people in person about pointless topics you will not be doing the same thing with idiots online.

Didn't expect to get such a huge response to this thread. But thanks everyone who's replied and expressed their views. I suppose considering that there's only a 50% turn out, at least I'm a bit better than those that didn't attend.

It's a very good point that there may be many people there who might be there but really didn't enjoy being there. I remeber I was told about that once in my previous job. This girl who's in marketing and she had to go to all these functions because she has to socialise and make connections but hates being there.

Why are we 'introverts' forced to go to these events in order to increase our chances of getting a promotion? Shoudln't a promotion solely be based on our ability to work? Oh well, I suppose that's how society work and who am I to argue :disgust:

n0cmonkey, care to elaborate a bit more on that man overboard incident?

brigend: I don't see how discussion about computer hardware / software and networks is pointless. Tho I gather that many in this world would consider those discussions to be pointless 😀

Because extroverts don't understand.

Nothing exciting really. Drinks were involved, and there was a small movement to relieve the boat of one of the passengers. We couldn't find him. 🙁

😛

Promotions have little to do with ability to work, IMHO.

Its all about connections, visibility and most importanlty working well with others and fitting in

I call that a sad fact of life! While I agree that someone who doesn't fit in or is hated by everyone shouldn't be promoted. I don't see promoting your 'friends' is hardly fair. Any no I didn't miss a promotion opportunity because of being an introvert!! 😀

n0cmonkey, was that dude ever found??? Or was he taken by the sharks??? :Q

Mulla,

Repeat after me. Life isn't fair. Life isn't fair.

Its all about playing the game. There was this one guy I know who was absolutely brilliant and accomplished great things. He was always frustrated that he didn't get promoted and stayed in the same position for 5 years. He was eventually fired.

Why? Didn't play well with others and too much of an introvert/not a team player.

We couldn't find him, so he never went over. 🙁

I've missed opportunities because of my introvertedness. I've gotten fired because I missed those opportunities too. It sucks, but it's life.

spidey07: I totally agree that life isn't fair and I've always believed in the saying "It's not what you know, it's who you know." I knew that because every since I graduated my first 2 job I got through connections 😀 Are you an introvert yourself spidey07? Just interested to find out.

n0cmonkey: I hardly think you're an introvert on AT forums 😀 Always been a fan of your many posts. Hehehe... I suppose we are all 'different' when we're behind a computer screen!!! Getting fired simply because you are introverted???? That's the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard!

I can be a loud introvert. 😀

I didn't get fired for being an introvert. I missed some opportunities because I didn't see them or didn't step up, got very bitter, and deserved the boot in the butt.

Hell no I'm not an introvert.

I thrive on social contact and am generally energized by it.

I just think its good for your career to attend these kinds of things. Plus you can win money at the track.

Spidey would like a 5 dollar exacta wheel on 5 with 2,8,7,9 and 10 and a 5 dollar trifecta box on 9,7,2.

I usually go because I have a friend or two I work with....but we just go for the free booze and food after they cut us off (usually 3 drinks because the city is cheap) we bolt.
