is it normal to be referred by your last name at work?

I get it all the time. My first name is very common, so I get called "Pitts" all the time. I would never think of it as being derogatory or demeaning.

OP's last name must be so bad that he doesn't even wanna mention it here (after being asked numerous times) lol.

I think people prefer to call me by my last name as it's so short and easy to remember. Either way, I go by Nathan, Nate, or Po. Don't care which people use.

sometimes, depends. if youre uncomfortable with this practice then speak to the offenders. I dont see the big deal myself.

im pretty sure i prefer to be called by my last name over "mr computerguy" or "Mr.ScadaGuy". but thats usually customers that do that, at work im usually called by my first name, but thats probably has something to do with my last name. a lot of people here (higher ups) call me T, ive had that nick since i was born i think.

It started with me when I joined the Navy.
Of course when you join the military they call everyone by their last name.
So when it does happen now I really don't even notice it.

As I teacher I always use the my last name prefaced by Mister. I've taught at alternative schools where that wasn't always the case. It was with me and other teachers said they'd wished they'd done that too.

If the students bug me for my first name, I just tell them it is Mister.

In the military, do peers call each other by last name, or is it only superior officers addressing subordinates? I assumed the latter.

When I was in the navy it was usually either last names or nicknames for peers. Up to E6 was last name only. Above that was Chief <Last Name>. Officers were whatever their rank was and <Last Name>. Or more often just Sir. And the Captain was of course either just Captain or Sir (at least on the ship).

Everyone has their last name and rank on their shirt, so it was super convenient. My boss is ex-Navy too so we call each other by last names. So does my wife but that's just for when I'm not paying attention.

Yes it is common.

Even moreso when the person is ex-military or was involved in sports.

QFT.

I think one of my HS basketball coaches did not even bother to learn our first names.

OP is a little too touchy about his girly-girl last name. Maybe he should change it to "Mayonnaise" (Am I dating myself? Yes, I think I am!).

Hey, I know more men than women with the first name Kim.

There is a guy my age at work though whose last name is Kim... every now and then I address him as Kim in emails (especially since his name shows up as Kim, firstname).

I think it depends on your last name partially. If your last name is impossible for people to pronounce it is less likely to happen.
