is it normal to be referred by your last name at work?

This happens over and over again in a workplace setting.
My last name is a common female first name. This person SHOULD know my first name by now, by just using their brain a little. She just emailed me and it says Hi Lastname

Does this happen to you, too?

If you're last name is Miller, do people call you Hi Miller?

Never happened to me, but I could see it happening in the corporate world.

Mine would sound really odd ... "Mian, did you get that report done?"

everyone called everyone else by their last name's in high school.

I went to an all-boys jesuit school. I'm pretty sure half of my class' first names were Michael/Mike.

it's never happened to me at work, though. have you tried just telling her you prefer to be called by your first name?

You're in consulting, right? Yeah, it happens. At least at my firm we have a fair number of ex-military folks. They mostly go by their last name, and call me by mine. Just a different custom, I don't really mind it. I'm not ex-military, but it doesn't bother me at all, so I do the same when I am around them.

Now, if the lady doesn't actually know your name, thats a different story. We all know each others' first and last names, it'd be disrespectful otherwise, imho.

okay...but it still bothers me that she can't just use my first name

Tell her? 😕

I'm emailing her back with a response but in the end, I will write

Thanks,
FIRST NAME

Yeah that'll show her

What is up with the passive aggressive approach?

That may not even be noticed..

Is it really that hard to say 'I'd rather you call me by my first name'..? 😕

BTW, just consider it like as a nick name.

I mean I get called my first, shortened first name, and last name by different people. Makes not a lick of difference to me.

the lady should know my name... she's my "engagement representative"
I find it disrespectful to be honest
I wouldn't mind if she did it to everyone, but I'm fairly certain she's not

And in beginning, you should write "Hi, <her last name>"
see how she likes it.

no. it never happens to me, and if you don't like to be referred to by your last name just speak up.

Guys here do it all the time (I'm a big offender actually) and now more of the women are starting to do it.

Fortunately any stick I may have had up my butt fell out a lo9g time ago so I really couldn't care less whether peaople call me by my first name, last name, or even some other nickname. Who gives a crap.
