Is it normal for PC100 RAM to be able to run at 133 MHz?

Hola, I don't really know much about overclocking but I ordered a 256MB stick of PC133 Crucial RAM last week so I thought I'd see if my current RAM would be able to handle 133 MHz as well. My current RAM is a 128MB stick of Kingston ValueRAM with (I believe) NEC chips (I haven't opened the case in a while, and I forgot what brand the chips were),

Anyways, I have an ABiT KT7 with a non-overclocked Duron and I went into the BIOS and changed the DRAM clock from HCLK to HCLK+PCICLK, which upped the memory bus to 133MHz. I don't seem to be having any problems (yet 🙂) running at that speed with this RAM. Is this normal? How would I know if the RAM couldn't handle it? Would the system just not POST or boot into Windows?
TIA for your help.

if it didnt work, it would not post. use cpuid to confirm ur discovery! thats a great overclock..

Not all PC100 (8ns) memory will do 133FSB. You typically will not post, or get BSOD's if the FSB is too high. I had some Infineon PC100 that did 143FSB.

It POSTed fine and no BSODs, so that is good. But I thought the FSB was different than the DRAM clock? My processor still shows up as 7 x 100 = 700 MHz, so I think the FSB is still 100 MHz, right?

Yes, you upped your memory bus only. However, I would rather have the FSB at 133, not just the memory.

John, I am a little leery of upping the FSB because I have a stock TaiSol HSF and although my temperatures are reasonable, I have heard many people say you shouldn't overclock too much using the stock HSF. It would be easy to do since I have SoftMenu III on my MB, though.

my "micron" on generic pcb work at 133... about 7 month later, half the side died and gave me errors, only post at 64... and i threw it away and got real pc133

Generally speaking, CAS2 PC100 will run just fine at PC133 CAS3. Not always, but most generally. And, as some have noted, some PC100 will easily hit 140+. It's kind of hit-and-miss.
