Is it just me, or was Far Cry a terrible game?

I downloaded the free ad-supported version and played through it over the past ~1.5 weeks. I chose the second-easiest difficulty, because I wanted "a little challenge" (paraphrasing the description of the difficulty mode) rather than "a relaxing walk through a paradise" (again paraphrasing).

Now, I know I'm not particularly good at FPSes, but I just found the trigens to be generally too hard. It was pretty annoying to play, especially when the save points were far apart.... it's always nice dying right before a save point after clearing a very difficult room. What's great is that they got harder. How many shots to the head with a shotgun does it take to kill a rocket-launching-trigen???

I eventually ended up getting to the level "Volcano" (after you get across the island where you start unarmed and enter the building) but just couldn't get past the room of guys-with-almost-explosive-proof-armor-and-noiseless-shoes. I eventually gave up and enabled god mode... I can't imagine surviving the next room either. The main character guy in there took god knows how many shotgun blasts to the head to kill. The subsequent stage I probably could have eventually beaten since you at least have access to a room with ammo and a decent vantage point, but each rocket-launching trigen takes way too much ammo to kill.

Whoever did the difficulty scale for that game is an idiot. It was fun in parts where the bad guys were killable but past those stages it was just work. If the intent of the program was to show off CryEngine, well, it was good. If it was supposed to be a game, it sucked.

edit: Update: I created a new profile and played for a while on the hardest difficulty setting. I had no trouble at all with the human enemies. It's just the damn trigens that they made ridiculously hard. Since the trigens are a pretty big part of the game and make it too hard, the game sucks.

I thought that the story/acting was weaksauce (I'm a Baldur's Gate fanboy, so what can I say), but as far as FPS action/outdoor atmospheres, I thought it was amazing. The game was incredibly good looking, sometimes I play it just for that reason.

I used to think the game was too hard as well. For me, I had a really hard time killing the helicopters until apoppin told me to hide behind a tree. :light:

With enough practice I was able to beat the game on 'medium' without cheating whatsoever. You need to learn to be very wily to get good at Far Cry. Always use your environment to your advantage. Learn the alt-fires on all of the weapons. I used to like setting the machinegun so that it shoots one bullet at a time, then hold right mouse for more precision and go for a long-range headshot while crawling (phew!).

The game was revolutionary in terms of graphics and physics. I have yet to play an adventure game that was more enjoyable. For some reason I liked it even more than I did HL2.

I agree: the story and voice acting sucked. The atmosphere was amazing, and the game does look pretty awesome. But the gameplay, not so much.

Helicopters I could handle.

I'm still not sure how one would beat the "Volcano" rooms (without playing them hundreds/thousands of times and just passing by luck).

Yup, excellent engine demo. But so was X-isle (the dinosaur thing), and x-isle wasn't frustrating ;)

I had a blast when I was just fighting mercenaries. But the later parts of the game, no.

Amusing game, but the story and voice acting were both horrible.

But it sure was pretty.......

Probably my #2 game to be released after Deus Ex. Aside from a couple of the indoor levels around the middle/end of the game I love everything about it. The graphics are beautiful, the combat is relatively realistic when you look at Doom 3 and Half-Life 2, and the voice acting and storyline are hilarious. It's like I'm watching a cheesy 80's Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, and that is a huge plus to me. With companies like Bungie and iD trying too hard at being cinematic or deep recently, Far Cry is a huge fresh breath of air. When I want to just explore and blow stuff up, Far Cry is where I go.

I like the gameplay. The story isn't exactly great or anything, but at least it entertains you for when youre not shooting at big creatures clawing your face off or drowning or something.

I agree with you on the difficulty scale - I have a hard time at some points on the easiest level, mostly because a guy with a rocket launcher (read: sniper) in a tower 500 meters away is hitting me in the face every time he shoots. Also, 2hkos from trigens are not cool...

it is still a great game to play, though. One of the better single-player FPSes I've played.

I remember it being more frustrating then anything else. It could've been a decent game, but they overdid the health on the mutants big time, and portions of the later level were more frustrating deathtrap then actual game.

I remember replaying certain areas over and discovering 6 different ways to perform an objective. That was just brilliant. The tri-gens made the game too doom like though. Removed the tactics from the equation.

its boring. wasn't challenging, bad story, i didn't think it looked that good (doom3 was far superior imo), it felt like serious sam minus the fun. but then again, i can hardly ever finish single player games. i play maybe an hour till i get bored. the only ones that i've actually played through in recent memory were hl2 and halo (halo just cos it was "OMG YEAHH" back then). everything else could not hold my attention very long. mp games s'where the fun's at.

Wasn't challenging? I think you need to play the game again. Either that or stop basing your game impressions on an hour of gameplay.

FarCry is good for benchmarking, mostly. I myself only liked the first four levels, and after that it exponentially decayed.

FC had great gameplay and combat along with some excellent level design. I stopped paying attention to the story after the first few levels, but it was still a lot of fun to play through. You don't necessarily need to have a deep story to make a great game.

I played on the veteran difficulty and it was hard, but in a good sort of way. I did use the quicksave system though, which is not enabled by default. Still, the AI was very easy to take advantage of and the game became a lot easier once you figured out how the enemies behave. I can only remember one part that was too difficult to the point of being frustrating, that level where you only have an M4 with 8 bullets and need to wade through a swamp with trigens all around you. It took me at least 10 tries to get through that without the trigens seeing me.

On the whole I thought it was a great game, but ya the story kinda sucked and went like this:

Contact: Go to Pointx
Arrives
Contact: Go to Pointx
Main Character: whines
go back 3 lines

Far Cry Manual Save Cheat
It's easy to save anywhere in the game. Just open the console (the ~ or TILDE key) and type \save_game. If you can bind the command to an unused key, you will be able to quicksave any time with a press of the button. You may otherwise just type in the command normally each time you want to save.

Submitted by Lawrence Cade

Just add -DEVMODE to the end of the executable command line if the save command is not working.

...and yes it is just you. Far Cry is both beautiful and fun to play.

Does the free game allow you to patch to 1.33? Don't do 1.4 it's a terrible patch that ruins the SP and MP game. If you haven't patched then that is why you are frustrated.

Also, you were shooting Kreiger in the wrong head if you know what I mean. If you aim for his wedding tackle he goes down in a few hits.

After you pass a hard part hit Esc, press ~ and type /save_game 1

This will save the game at your current position. That one part near the end in the hallway is the hardest part of the whole game. You need to develop some tactics to deal with the bad guys.

Just because you can't plow through a game the first time through without dying doesn't make it a bad game. Learn some tactics, don't just run and gun through that part and you will be fine. FarCry is still my favorite game of all time. I'm playing it through for the 3rd or 4th time.

One of the best things about this game is all the SP maps and mods that you can download. Go to farcry-maps.com and pick up the Matto series. Matto 3 and 4 were phenomenal.

No, FC did suck. Especially the last 1/3 of the game which is almost unplayable.

I liked it pretty much. The trigens part of the story didn't mesh too well, but the environments were awesome. As for killing, if I remember correctly, I used the sniper rifle quite a bit, and of course used whatever cover I could find. Doing that, I don't recall any particularly difficult levels.

Oh yeah, I remember using grenades quite a bit in some areas. Other than that, I think it was usually one of the assault rifles rather than shotty in many situations, although I do remember the shotty getting some good use now and again.

This game, probably more than many, choosing the right weapons and tactics to deal with bad guys was important.

I mainly liked the openess of the game and the long ranges which provided several ways to complete a mission. It was a refreshing change from linear railroad shooters taking place in small, dark corridors with monsters spawning behind you. The story and voice acting were so bad as to be laughable - and some of it was funny, even though they may not have intended it. Being a person who likes challenge, I enjoyed playing it on realistic.

Funny, the first 1/3 was my favorite :) It was the indoor middle part and the end-trigen part that I wasn't crazy about. All the outdoor wide open maps I found amazing and loved circling around the island one way, and then reloading and trying it the other way, and then trying the most direct path. The graphics killed my (then) 6800gt.

I do remember it being hard as hell at some points, and the manual saving thru console command was annoying. I actually did have to go godmode at the very end in that valley of trigens as I tried it about 100 times and just couldn't beat it.

I found it more challenging and more fun than HL2, whose linearity I found constraining.
