Is it just me or are movies getting better these days?

After a long week I finally had a chance to kick back for a little while and catch up on a few movies. Smokin Aces was really good, reminded a bit of a Tarantino movie minus the great dialog he writes. But besides that I thought the premise was interesting, Jeremy Piven was good in his role. In fact I thought the entire cast was pretty decent, it was also kind of cool to see one of my favorite rappers (Common) in a movie.

After watching Aces I popped Children of Men in the DVD player and I was pleasantly surprised. I had'nt heard much about the movie but it was really, really good, the last 20 or 30 minutes of the movie was friggin unreal. Every 2 minutes I was like "holy sh*t" did I just see that.

Tonight I'm staring at a stack of movies trying to decide what to watch: Casino Royale, The Good Shepherd, Blood Diamond, Curse Of The Golden Flower, The Illusionist, Tideland, Calvaire, etc. Maybe it's just me but there have been so many good movies in the past year or two, it's getting hard to keep up.

13 Tzameti - really good foreign film, if you can find this one check it out
The Departed - loved this one
The Illusionist
Harsh Times - good, but reminded a bit of Training Day
Match Point - great, great movie
Babel
Inside Man
Brick - this movie friggin rocked, Levy is on his way to being a major talent
Half Nelson - I'm liking Gossling more and more in every movie

That's all I can think of from the top of my head, but it seems like there's a plethora of good films these days.

You list some good movies although Smokin' Aces wasn't that great in my opinion, just a mindless shoot-em-up.

IMO its you ... of course there are still some good movies being made (like Children of man) & always will be, but the vast majority of modern Hollywood productions are steaming piles of crap these days.

Smokin' Aces is awful. The rest of what you listed is good except for The Illusionist. Who didn't see that coming a mile away? The Prestige was much better.

its coz ur olny watching the movies hat are good....try watching Epic Movie, which came out only a couple of months ago...thats gotta be one of the worst movies ever made

Babel sucked./ It sucked worse than... wellI dsont feel like getting banned tonite 😀. BUt Children of Men isa good movie.

ouch you guys are brutal, Smokin Aces was'nt bad at all. It's obviously a shootem up type of flick but it was good. One of the amusing parts was the scene with Ben Affleck and crew when the neo nazis drove up, I did't see that coming. Also the chick with the HUGE gun wiping out the FBI, what kind of gun was that by the way. Those bullets had the impact of cannon balls.

I thought Babel was really good although overhyped, it reminded me a lot of Traffic.

wow, can't believe you did'nt like it. What about Lucky Number Slevin, Running Scared or The Departed. Did you like any of those?

i'm actually liking a lot of the movies that come out these days, too. maybe it's just because i don't have a tv and i'm in college so when i do get to start watching movies, a whole lot of time has gone by...

the departed was really good, I haven't seen any you listed but that and the illusionist.

I liked both, at first I thought the illusionist was stupid, but in the end I liked it.

There have been a bunch of great movies over the last couple years. The problem is, they're peppered amongst hundreds of crappy ones.

The last four movies I saw in the theaters were Munich, Prestige, The Good Shepherd, and The Departed. I enjoyed all 4 and thought they were well written and directed.

Spoilers with no warning is not cool, has never been cool, and never will be cool. You didn't see it coming? Well, now anybody who reads your post will.

Casino Royale was incredible
The Illusionist sucked
Match Point sucked
Babel sucked
Inside man was pretty good. Clive Owen rocks
The Good Shepherd really really sucked
Blood Diamond was pretty good
Children of Men was terrible
The Departed sucked

Personally, I don't see anything getting better in Hollywood. I will check out Smoking Aces, though. Piven is great.
