It's illegal to do that, but you could probably convince the police that you had to do it to make sure they didn't get away. Still, it's more illegal for them to key your car then for you to knock them over, as long as your car is worth a good amount of money.

good point. enough to stop him and detain him. using a bat or other such device would be assault with a deadly weapon, or with intent to maim or kill.

there was a guy in my apt. complex who caught a punk thief trying to rip his speakers out of his car...he beat the crap out of him...when the police arrived, they patted him on the back, told him that he was trying to sudue a criminal and was within his rights, then promptly took the punk thief to the hospital...then to jail
