Wouldn't an easier solution just be to stop encouraging birds near your home? There are readily available solutions for that. Killing the hawk would seem to only invite the same issue later when another hawk finds out there's a free lunch.

A dove is nothing more than a pigeon that some people like to eat.

They are otherwise incredibly stupid birds.

Aside from the penalty for violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, you might also be violating local ordinances regarding discharging firearms if you shoot it. The penalty for the former is up to $15,000 or up to 6 months in prison.

"Like all birds of prey Red-tailed hawks are protected by state and federal laws. But despite this some are killed by unethical hunters, and farmers that feel they are protecting chicken livestock"

We have them here. My only concern is that they might swoop down and snatch one of the little rat dogs that aren't any bigger than a rabbit...THAT would piss me off...

Do you think that birds only hunt animals that we (humans) consider rodents?

heh, neighbor had a hawk swoop down and snatch his cat off the patio. He dropped him about 20 yards away. Needless to say the cat is very nervous when he goes outside now, checking all around for any hawks.

I've got a pretty big hawk nearby. They're awesome creatures. Never had a problem with rodents.

Besides being illegal, "removing" a primary/major predator from the food chain is not a good thing.

I would personally like to have on around my house.
Tiny little birds shit all over the place including the car. Having one or two of these around will definitely get rid of that issue.

An alternative would be to make or buy a sillouette of a hawk, and mount it in the appropriate place (you may need more than one). They're available at gardening centers, etc. Samo for owls.

Akin to the use of scarecrows, they can be quite effective.

If I remember correctly, getting caught killing a hawk will put you deep into federal trouble as a protected bird of prey, the same as killing an eagle. You are not supposed to raise or keep a hawk or eagle without the proper federal permits on top of any state permits, and you are not supposed to have in your possession any hawk or eagle feathers and if caught will be facing federal charges unless you are one of the few exempt groups.

Anthropomorphise much?

ALL raptors are covered by The Federal Wildlife Protection Act.

Do it and it's a good way to see the working of the Federal Penile System.

Don't be hatin' on the hawk. He's doing his job to keep the balance.
Without supreme predators, there would be no "normal".

If you kill anything, kill any cats outside:D
They are not native to this country and kill for fun mostly
and not for food.

haha... thats actually funny. But seriously, don't be a douche and kill an animal for surviving. It's not slamming little kids into the wall (although that would be funny too), just common birds that you see everyday.
